Very interesting read. This could be why new phones now come with these turbo fast chargers rather than slow overnight trickle chargers. The device that I just bought will charge from 30% to 80% in less than 20 minutes.

The problem with very cheap smartphones is that they are almost unusable practically speaking

Re the 3000 baht nokky... I genuinely wonder what type of user can cope with a smartphone with 1gb of ram and 16gb of storage?

Id say that is under specced for just about everyone who would use a smartphone

I often hear people say things like that, but I think I could cope quite nicely, as could the rest of my family.

What exactly are you doing with your phone that one of these lower spec phones couldn't do?

Plus, it’s available with 32 or 64 GB if you want more memory, although obviously at a higher price

As soon as you put about 15 apps on it it's full.

And surfing net becomes almost impossible with only 1gb of ram

Yes you can buy more memory models etc but that's exactly my point, those higher specs are the minimum

For the vast majority of smartphone users 1gb ram and 16gb of storage is simply not enough. I'm simply trying to warn prospective purchasers who are tempted by the super low price(3,000 baht) that's its more than likely false economy.

My first two smartphones became redundant quite quickly. Don't waste your money like I did!

A lower spec phone with just 1 GB RAM will probably be able to do many of the same things as a higher spec phone that has more RAM. Just more slowly, even annoyingly slowly. And forget anything but the simplest games. Youtube may not be the best experience either. If it's just for making and receiving calls and using a few simple apps then probably 1 or 1.5 GB and a low end cpu and gpu will be fine.

Anyway RAM is fairly cheap so having 2 GB shouldn't force the price up too much. It's the more expensive things that have to be scrimped on for low price: camera, internal memory, quality of components such as radios (WiFi, wireless data, Bluetooth), cpu, gpu, screen, etc.

On the other hand 5,000 - 6,000 baht will get you a really good phone these days with a very reasonable camera for most people.

My phone is a few years old, and I've put 7 apps on it in that time. I've always had my main storage on a SD card and browsing the web is something I don't do very often. I prefer to do most of my online stuff on my laptop. My phone is for emergency use when I'm out.

I find nothing more irritating than to be out with somebody who ignores me because they're doing stuff on their phone constantly. Yes, such people need something better, but people who go out to socialise with other human beings don't.
I've even been out with people who text each other rather than talk - quite sad.

My phone is predominantly used to make phone calls, act as my satnav, provide hotspot functionality as required, taking photos and Messenger if out. I DON'T need anything else.

Yes, it is how you intend to use the phone, but don't make statements such as, "Id say that is under specced for just about everyone who would use a smartphone," because you are never off yours. Others have a life.

I have a life too thanks

Enjoy yours, you are not the norm when it comes to smartphones, I clearly referred to most users

Was just trying to help them, shame you can't see that but instead make it all about you

I have to agree with BB this time. I would probably use the phone even less than he does. Also, I don't take photographs and would have nothing to store, surf the internet do correspondence on my laptop and only need a phone for emergencies and staying in touch with my wife when out shopping. True, I am not the norm and I'm happy not being the norm. As long as I have a book to read, one with turnable pages, I can survive anywhere.

Absolutely agree, I see kids sat round a table texting, talking is not fashionable. :cuss:

I'd still like to know what a low spec phone can't do for the average user.

I have many friends who have top of the range phones, but they probably use them a lot less than I use mine. I ask them if they can they tell me what their phone does better than mine, and I either get a blank stare, or a list of stuff they never use. Theirs may be a little faster, and I agree, it can do a hell of a lot more than mine, but to use that extra stuff you have to be a phone nerd, and I don't mean that in a nasty way.

My phone does have a higher spec than the models referred to, but it's nothing special. My wife's cost less than half the price of mine (<5K) is fairly low spec but goes like a greyhound compared to mine. Hers would probably outperform phones that were twice as good as mine when it was built. Just saying its full when you've loaded 15 apps tells me nothing. What apps? Why do you need them?

Well, if BB is not the norm, according to colonel, then there are a lot of people in my social circle that are not the norm.

I reluctantly bought a smartphone about 4 years ago that was only because of 'whatsapp' and 'line'. Still only used for keeping in touch. I do take the odd pic but very rarely.

My daughter paid over 40,000 for her i-phone compared with 7,000 for mine which is still good after 4 years. I don't see her using it any more than I do.

Crikey ! If you paid 7,000 4 years ago, that was a very good phone. Dont tell is it was a.cheapo :-)

This year I paid a touch over 10,000 baht for a Xiaomi mi 10 which had the fastest processor in a phone last year and lots of memory and loads of stuff which i don't use. But downloading / internet is incredibly quick, it can keep a dozen screens open without me realising and it will be good for a few years at least. The screen is large, so reading online books with blue light is easy. Quick charge and a shit load of stuff you don't want to know.

Compared to a 5k phone that is 6,000 baht more over 2 years (minimum - my last phone did 3 years). 3k a year. 60 baht a week. Less than a beer a week for very little frustration.

Everyone's needs are different, but anyone who lets there partner pay 20k-40k for a phone is wasting money. IMHO.

BTW, the only 'good' reason to upgrade phones at the moment is the camera. They are getting a lot better than a few years ago. But... Read the reviews. MP doesn't mean everything. Mine has 4 cameras on the back. They aren't all great. A lot better than 3-4 years ago but better ones coming out all the time and in mid range phones as well as tech moves down the range.
