Which Mobile Phone?
Re: Which Mobile Phone?
Thank you huahin4ever. A good response to my question. Rather than say, "Under specced for just about everyone who would use a smartphone," and then basically tell me I am not a normal user. If he had said if you buy one of these phones, be aware you won't be able to do X, Y and Z, and if you do A, B, and C the response time will be unacceptable, the post would have been much more helpful, and I doubt I would have even queried it.
[Edit] Oh and that proper resolution and brightness to be used in sunlight etc. thingy is huge for me, and something I wasn't aware had been resolved. Can you please advise what I need to look for when I upgrade my current steam driven phone.

Re: Which Mobile Phone?
Great post, very well explained.huahin4ever wrote:Try to speed write messages on a low spec phone. You will end up throwing it onto a wall, but again one finger, tap, tap, tap, tap with one finger writing it is good enough. I have followed this discussion for some time now, and there are two things I get from it.
1. Seems like it is older people discussing new types of smart phones, which have no clue what younger people do with their phones, and young people are extremely well in multitasking on their phones, which is useless on old and slow phones.
2. If you have proper modern and fast smart phone, you may do everything you do on a laptop, but on the go and more! Many people do this these days, including me, but this is not something many retired/pensioners/old people do, with only a few exceptions, so they are probably well off with an old and slow phone.
I myself have tried old and slow phones, and never again! PS! I use my smart phone for almost everything, i.e. multiple email accounts including business email through Exchange. Photos, taking and editing, sharing etc. Internet banking through multiple banks overseas and here in Thailand. Personal ID for financial and government pages in my home country (I'm officially still living in my home country). A must for me is a lot of internal storage du to I use the memory card slot for a 2nd SIM (Thai SIM and SIM from my home country). Browsing with multiple tabs, social media etc etc. Navigation is much faster on a proper smart phone with proper specs than an old one, and more useful when I can store a lot of offline maps. Sometime I even connect to a laptop and can use features on my phone as messaging and calling through my laptop on the phone. And off course I use office apps too. What I really do not do too much is gaming, but it is nice to have a phone which can run all mobile games. At last newer and better phones have large screens with proper resolution and brightness to be used in sunlight etc. Very important if you use it for navigation riding motorcycles, which I do!
I can go on and on and on, but for you elder people I understand maybe all this is not necessary. I'm in my forties, but I have a feeling most of you gyus discussing on here are 60,70, 80 plus, and it is well documentend elderly people doesn't always see what new and fast devices can do because they do not need the features, but that doesn't mean others don't need them!
Two questions as you clearly know your stuff on those matters
1. Would you agree with me that, especially with the very latest OS's, MOST people should be wary of buying the cheapest ie lowest spec smartphone and specifically one that has only 1GB of RAM?
2. would you agree to give up your phone and use a 1GB phone(and all that goes with that) even it if were supplied completely free (nb rules are you have to use it as your only phone for 2 years)?
3. As above but 2GB?
Oops that's 3 questions
Thanks

Maybe it was the pompous way you dismissed me ("dont make statements like" "others have a life" and repeated bitching about my post )Big Boy wrote:Thank you huahin4ever. I am afraid I was incensed about your use of the broad brush use of 'everyone who would use a smartphone' indicating we were all of the same ilk. All that I want to know is what I am missing out on - I don't think there is very much.
Everybody has personal needs. My needs are not so great from a phone. As huahin4ever states, I'm an old git
, and I'm much more adapt to using a computer. I can think of nothing worse than typing on a phone. I am so slow, the phone probably goes into sleep mode long before I'm finished. As I said, a statement such as, "You won't be able to do X, Y and Z, and if you do A, B, and C the response time will be unacceptable," would have been helpful. I doubt I would ever want to do X, Y and Z, and not expecting too much from a mobile, I'd find response times for A, B, and C quite acceptable.

Re: Which Mobile Phone?
I just realised a couple of other advantages I've taken from my phone, apart from making calls.
If I send a text, I hardly ever use the keyboard as speech to text is 'almost' perfect these days.
And one I'd forgotten. I will always use it for directions. I've found Google maps being far superior to my onboard GPS in my car.

Re: Which Mobile Phone?
It seems that there are, basically, 2 types of users: 1. Those that use a phone as a phone. (They all have a camera) 2. Those that use a phone as a phone, & a computer. Figure out which category you're in and purchase accordingly.
Re: Which Mobile Phone?
The cameras on the newer mid-range phones have changed my views, I used to have very basic phones until a couple of years ago but recently I´ve got into mobile phone photography, which has become a hobby apart from pure photography.
You use the features of the phone camera to handle light control etc, and just concentrate on composition.
I still don´t buy top of the range but phones around 10,000bt now give you enough to take pretty impressive pictures.

Incensed?! And you infer that's its me who needs to get a life? Laughable... it's only a smartphone discussion!Big Boy wrote:I am afraid I was incensed about your use of the broad brush use of 'everyone who would use a smartphone' indicating we were all of the same ilk. Also I see you very conveniently missed out my key word 'almost' (everyone) .... Hmmmmm, tells me a lot!
I didn't reply(re phone capabilities) due to your unnecessary and inflammatory comments. Plus I thought it best others did as you would believe them but not me.
Anyway I'm done with this discussion now. I won't engage with such blatent negativity
Just Google is 1gb RAM enough for smartphone today? , see how you get on
Hopefully some others looking to buy a phone and reading this will take heed on my(and others) well meaning comments and ignore the curmudgeonly ones from you.

Jumps in..
I have more than one phone. The 2G dumb phone sits in my car for emergencies. It has a great standby and talk time; note that for emergencies you'll probably want to use the phone and not an app.
As for the smart phone, just buy the best phone you can afford on your budget. Don't budget to the spec of a phone.
I prefer Android over the iPhone, my wife has the latter and while it has its proponents, I'm not one of them. Not to put it down, I just think it is overpriced for what it is expected to do.
As for Android phones, the more RAM, the faster it can process things. With a small amount of RAM, YouTube videos will be in stop-start motion, the higher the amount the smoother the video. As with every other app you run. (RAM - random access memory - this is like the librarian working. The more librarians, the faster you get your material.)
Most phones these days come with a decent amount of ROM (read only memory - aka the library). This allows you to store stuff on the phone.
External memory, aka sd cards. Some phones also have this as an additional place to keep your stuff. Typically Android only.
What I look for in a smart phone is enough RAM to keep my gps working smoothly with an app or three running in the background.
An sd card slot is particularly useful, as not all phones can connect directly to other external memory like a thumb drive.
I also look for a 3.5 mm headphone jack, I prefer wired connections in some cases and can plug to my car stereo aux in with a much better connection than bluetooth.
Size - it should fit considerably in my pocket but not be so small as not to be able to read the screen.
Also I avoid the Chinese brands as they run a modified form of Android that is more suited for use in that country and will not run many apps from the android store.
So shop around, if you see something you like and is affordable, go ahead. Only time will tell if you will be happy with it in the long run.

P.S. while I use the smart phone for many things, one of the really annoying quirks is trying to shop on lazada. It redirects you to the play store and tried to make you download their app. So I always use a desktop or laptop to do online shopping.
Oh, re typing. You can use the Swype type keyboard, it gets really quick with practice. I'm still not comfortable talking to my phone.

Oops! Considerably should really be comfortably. I also detest the automatic spell check that replaces your text with what the phone thinks it should be. Smart indeed!

I still find it funny when using speech to text and the software asterisks out any swear words apart from the first letter.
e.g. F***, C*** etc.

By no means am I a mobile techie but recently been really getting pissed off at my Samsung A10, so this morning off I trot to Banana IT and walk out with a Xiaomi Mi10 5G 8GB Ram 128GB Rom at 10 baht shy of 13,000. All data transferred from my old phone and a whole heap of freebies, inc. robot floor vacuum cleaner( a godsend because of 2 mega hair shedding mutts), Mi Smart Speaker which does all sorts of shit once I master it.
All in all a satisfactory day.
