15 new Covid deaths, 2,012 new cases

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... -new-cases

The government on Wednesday reported 15 new deaths related to Covid-19, raising the toll to 178, and 2,012 new infections for a total of 61,699 cases.

Apisamai Srirangson, a spokeswoman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said the 15 new deaths were 11 men and four women, aged 35-88. Nine of them were in Bangkok, two each in Chiang Mai and Samut Prakan provinces and one each in Chon Buri and Ranong.

Most of them, nine, had hypertension and diabetes. Others had heart disease, high cholesterol, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, kidney disease, thyroid disorder, obesity or Alzheimer's.

Ten deaths were from contact with infected family members, two from colleagues, one had visited an entertainment place, another was close to a previously infected neighbour and another had an infected close friend at a fitness club, Dr Apisamai said.

Nine cases had died in 7-15 days after their infection had been confirmed, two died before knowing the results of their Covid-19 tests, and two died on the same day the results were known.

Of the 2,012 new cases in the previous 24 hours, 2,001 were local infections and 11 were imported. Of the local infections, 1,893 were confirmed at hospitals and 108 through mass testing.

Bangkok logged 830 new cases, Samut Prakan 161, Chon Buri 108, Nonthaburi 71, Samut Sakhon 59 and Pathum Thani 57.

Dr Apisamai said the daily number of severely ill cases in Bangkok was rising, up from 109 on April 21 to 255 on Tuesday, and the number of patients dependent on ventilators was also increasing, from 42 on April 21 to 104 on Tuesday.

Patients with mild symptoms were being asked to move to field hospitals or hospitels, so hospitals could reserve beds for critically ill people, she said.

The 11 imported cases over the past 24 hours were quarantined arrivals from India, the United Arab Emirates, Czech Republic, Qatar and China.

Of the 61,699 total cases, 34,402 (55%) had recovered, including 851 discharged over the previous 24 hours, and 27,119 were at hospitals, of which 695 were in critical condition and 199 dependent on ventilators.

During the third wave of Covid-19, this month, there were so far 32,836 cases and 84 deaths, Dr Apisamai said.

Global Covid-19 cases rose by 830,822 in 24 hours to 149.33 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 14,821 to 3.15 million.

India reported 362,902 new cases, raising its total to 17.99 million, and 3,285 new deaths for a toll of 201,165. It ranked second in the world by the number of total cases.

First was the United States which had 32.93 million cases, up 52,046, and the most deaths at 587,384, up 885.

^ That's the first time ever I've seen a confirmed case for a Chinese person in quarantine here. As far as I'm concerned there is a News blackout in China, as there has been nothing at all for months about what is happening with the pandemic there.

That looks promising as long as it's not a result of cutting back on testing which was highlighted a week or so ago.

10 more deaths is still bad news.

Covid UPDATE: 1,871 new infections and 10 deaths, expats eligible for vaccine in Thailand

https://thethaiger.com/coronavirus/covi ... -10-deaths

1,871 new Covid-19 cases and 10 coronavirus-related deaths were reported today by Thailand’s Public Health Ministry, raising the total count since the start of the pandemic last year to 63,570 Covid-19 infections and 188 fatalities. Covid-related deaths in Thailand have been reported each day since April 17.

Thailand now has 27,988 active Covid-19 cases with many infections related to entertainment venues. Out of today’s new cases, 1,830 cases are local transmissions, 34 were detected in active case finding, and the other 7 were detected in quarantine for those entering Thailand from overseas. 689 cases were reported today in Bangkok followed by 151 cases in Samut Prakan, just southeast of the capital. 89 cases were reported in Chiang Mai and 81 in Pathum Thani.

In Chon Buri, 112 new cases were confirmed today by the Chon Buri Health Department, a slight increase from yesterday’s count of 108. Since April 1, a total of 2,265 Covid-19 cases and 2 coronavirus-related deaths have been reported in the coastal province, which includes Pattaya. There are currently 1,584 active cases in the province.

Today’s numbers continue a general downward trend in the reported cases since April 23 when 2,839 infections were reported, a record daily total. It’s “good news,” according to deputy spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Natapanu Nopakun, who gives the daily report from the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration in English.

To help combat the spread of Covid-19, provincial governments have the power to impose local disease control measures. So far, 73 of 77 provinces, have set orders requiring people to wear face masks in public. Violators face a fine of up to 20,000 baht.

12 provinces have requested that people stay at home during specified hours to help slow the spread of the virus. Natapanu says this is not a curfew, it is a request from provinces asking for the “kind cooperation” of people to stay at home during late night and early morning hours.

“We have never announced a curfew.”

The Bangkok Post version for today. Death details posted below, the rest of the story at link.

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... -new-cases

....."Six of the fatalities were in Bangkok. The rest were in one each Nakhon Sawan, Samut Prakan, Yasothon and Ayutthaya.

Five of them had diabetes. Other existing conditions they had were hypertension (4), stroke (2), obesity (1), heart disease (1), high cholesterol (1), chronic lung disease (1), chronic kidney diseases (1). Three said they had no existing conditions, or had not been aware of them.

Two of the people who died had met with infected relatives. Another two had dined with infected colleagues. One was bed-ridden and his caregiver had been infected. Another had attended a seminar with an infected person. One worked at a karaoke shop. Risk factors could not be identified for the remaining three.

Five of them died within 6-16 days after their infection had been confirmed. Two passed before the infection was confirmed and one died on the day the test result came.

"Deaths come faster and symptoms are more severe in many cases," Dr Taweesilp said."......

Indian Covid-19 strains ‘not in Thailand yet’

https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40000329

Two potent strains of Covid-19 spreading rapidly in India have not yet been detected in Thailand, a Chulalongkorn University virologist said on Wednesday.

Dr Yong Poovorawan said Chula’s laboratory recently tested more than 500 samples taken from Covid-19 patients in Thailand and found 98 per cent were the B117 (UK) strain. None of the samples tested positive for the Indian, Bengal, South African or Brazilian strains, he said.

The Indian variant spreads faster than the UK strain because of a change in a spike gene from asparagine to tyrosine and its enhanced ability to enter human cells, explained Dr Yong.

Meanwhile, the Bengal variant has a Lysine spike gene at position 484 that may give it the same protection from vaccines as the South African and Brazilian strains.

India is now the global hotspot of the pandemic with more than 300,000 new cases per day this week and a death toll that has risen above 200,000.

I see they've added a colour (or at least re-instated it). Apart from being colours, do we know what they mean?
