The Public Health Ministry on Friday reported 27 more Covid-related deaths, for a toll of 363, and 2,044 new cases, raising the total to 78,855.

Over the past 24 hours, 2,377 patients were declared recovered and were discharged from hospitals.

In the third wave of Covid-19, starting early last month, there have been 49,992 cases, 21,746 of whom have already recovered.

Panprapa Yongtrakul, assistant spokeswoman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said 18 deaths were in Bangkok, two each in Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan provinces and one each in Pathum Thani, Chaiyaphum, Chachoengsao, Ranong and Rayong.

Fifteen were men and 12 women. They were aged 30-90 years. Seventeen of them had diabetes. Other chronic illnesses included hypertension, heart disease, high cholesterol, obesity, lung disease, rheumatoid arthritis, previous stroke, renal disease, brain disease and cancer.

Thirteen had been in close contact with infected family members, five lived in risk areas, one was a shop owner, another had contact with another confirmed case and one visited a risk area.

The 2,044 new cases were reported in 68 provinces and included 2,040 local infections, 1,820 of which were confirmed at hospitals and 220 via mass testing.

Greater Bangkok recorded 1,372 new cases and the rest of the country logged 668 new cases over the past 24 hours.

Four new cases were quarantined arrivals from Malaysia (three Thais sneaking through the border) and Tanzania.

Of the 78,855 total cases, 49,172 (62%) had recovered and 29,320 were at hospitals, including 1,170 in critical condition and 367 dependent on ventilators.

Global Covid-19 cases rose by 846,453 in 24 hours to 156.68 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 13,774 to 3.26 million. India logged 414,176 new cases for a total of 21.48 million and 3,920 new deaths for a toll of 234,071.

It really isn't surprising how Covid was imported from Myanmar, which I think was the thin end of the wedge to this current 'third wave'. I read this article today published yesterday:
Arrest of illegal immigrants in Prachuap reveals the large sums paid to people smugglers in Thailand

The arrest of a group of illegal immigrants who sneaked across the border in Prachuap Khiri Khan has revealed the amount of money paid to the traffickers who smuggle them.

On Wednesday (May 5) thirty migrants from Myanmar were rounded up in Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Ao Noi Subdistrict as they attempted to enter the country illegally.

The arrest of the group, who were aged between 14 and 30 years old, is part of a wider operation led by immigration and the security forces to crack down on people slipping into the country across the border with Myanmar.

Officials said one man confessed to being the ringleader of the group.

He lives in Ban Mudon in Myanmar, opposite the Dan Singkhon border crossing and frequently brings people over the border from Myanmar.

The ringleader told officers that a Thai broker pays him 4,000 baht per head and that he would have earned about 120,000 baht from this particular trip across the border.

He went to say that the Thai broker earns even more money once he has delivered the workers to employers in Samut Sakhon or Bangkok where they typically go to work on fishing boats or in factories.

He said the Thai broker is paid 15,000 baht per head and that he can earn in the region of half a million baht after just one trip.

The ringleader said that he has hundreds of people on a waiting list wanting to make the journey into Thailand.

And to give an insight into the grim reality of life as an illegal migrant worker in Thailand, the ringleader said that the employers then deduct the delivery fee from the salaries of the workers until the debt is paid off.

24/7! Not only unenforceable, totally impractical.

Yes, we know TIT. Thai people will continue to do what they always do i.e. do what they want, irrespective of the law, but the question is why have they announced it? What has happened?

I don't know if true, but I've been told it is because there are 123 cases, and the curfew relates to just 3 villages. I guess the truth will out soon.

I think we had this discussion a couple of weeks back and it was concluded it depends on what time of day the count is cut off. At the same time, CCSA was suffering similar criticism, and they gave the same answer.

This is a strange one. Are they recent arrivals to the country, all come from an enclave in Bangkok, or simply a case of association in Chantaburi?

Chanthaburi gems market closed as 52 Africans get Covid

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... -get-covid

CHANTRABURI: Authorities have ordered the closure of a gems market in Muang district of this eastern province after 52 people there tested positive for Covid-19.

All 52 new patients were African nationals working in the gems trade at the market,Thai media reported.

Of the 27 cases, 25 were confirmed on Thursday and 27 others on Friday.

Chanthaburi governor Suthee Thongyaem signed an order on Thursday to close the gems market on Srichan Road in Muang district.

Thai PBS reported that the market, the gems trade hub in this eastern province, has been shuttered for 14 days as part of Covid-19 control measures.

Apirak Pisut-aporn, chief of the Chanthaburi provincial public health office, said the 52 cases represented a sizeable new cluster. People deemed at-risk at the market, particularly all African nationals, must take Covid-19 tests and mass testing would be conducted in surrounding communities, said Dr Apirak.

Mr Suthee expressed his concern over the outbreak at the gems market. An intensive public relations campaign has been launched to urge people who may have been exposed -- both Thais and foreign nationals -- to urgently seek Covid-19 tests.

The governor also ordered the closure of a nearby amulet market.
