COVID-19: 375,000 school pupils absent over virus

The number of children off school due to COVID-19 in England is at its highest rate since schools reopened in March, latest government figures show.

Data released by the Department of Education shows around 5.1% of all pupils in state-funded schools did not attend school for COVID-19 related reasons on 24 June - a total of 375,000 children.

This is up from 3.3% on 17 June and 1.2% on 10 June.

In primary schools, 4.5% of children did not attend due to virus-related reasons on 24 June, up from 2.7% on 17 June and 1.1% on 10 June.

In total, 24,000 children were off with suspected cases of coronavirus and 15,000 stayed at home after testing positive.

The majority of absentees, 279,000 students, were self-isolating due to potential contact with a COVID-19 case from inside their educational setting.

In comparison, 57,000 were isolating after potentially coming into contact with a person who tested positive for the virus from outside their school, which is around 0.8% of all pupils in state-funded schools in England.

They’re taking an ultra-cautious approach - when one child tests positive they make the whole “bubble” isolate, which can be just the class, but in some cases the whole year. My 8 year old granddaughter is now isolating for 10 days because somebody in her school year (not class) tested positive - madness IMO.

Phuket Municipality has ordered the closure of all schools under their jurisdiction from 12-23 July 2021 and switch to online learning instead. All teachers must continue working as normal and are strictly forbidden to leave the island.

With about 1 month to go I can't foresee any International School in the country opening as scheduled, unless something miraculous happens.

Preparing myself mentally for October at the earliest, but most likely after Songkran next year. The virus is totally out of control here and the vaccine program equally so. What a mess they have made.

An update on this concerning International Schools here. Most if not all delayed their normal yearly opening date from mid-August until September 1 in the hopes that face to face school attendance would then be allowed.

Not to be, and on-line learning begins for all or most tomorrow. All the delay from mid-August to September 1 achieved was to now shorten various term breaks throughout the year to make up for the lost time.

Hopefully the kids will be allowed to resume their normal on-site school life sometime before New Year.

Jabs for kids crucial for on-site education
Schools will resume on-site learning in November, provided that sufficient vaccines are made available for students next month, the Education Ministry has said.

Education Minister Treenuch Thienthong said on Monday the decision to reopen on-site classrooms in November came from lessons learned from conducting online and on-air studies during the pandemic.

Speaking at a press conference at the ministry attended by senior education and disease control officials, Ms Treenuch said the ministry consulted with the public health and the interior ministries before setting the Nov 1 target for school reopening. However, a return to class depends on the vaccine rollout, said Ms Treenuch who added that Pfizer vaccine jabs will be offered next month to students aged 12-17.

The Pfizer vaccine will be offered to 4.5 million students generally from Mathayom 4-6 (grades 10 to 12). The jabs will also be offered to those studying in por wor chor (vocational certificate) and por wor sor (high vocational certificate) programmes at vocational institutes, which are both state and privately run.

Also eligible for the vaccine are students enrolled in religious, science and border police schools and educational establishments not run by the Education Ministry.

Students, 18 years and older, will also be eligible for vaccination.

The Education Ministry said the inoculations will be provided only if parents give their consent. The jabs will be distributed first to students in the dark-red zones hardest hit by the pandemic, including Bangkok.

Returning to children getting jabbed in England (guess it should be in the vaccine thread really but it's all to do with keeping schools open this, not saving lives), the vaccine minister Nadhim Zahawi has confirmed that children could overrule their parent's wishes and have the final say in whether they get the vaccine or not if they are deemed competent.
