Mobile phones

Post by pinsharp »

I am told that it is best to bring a UK mobile phone over to Thailand and get it 'unlocked'. If I use a pay-as-you-go service what are the charges for calls to UK ..and are local calls very expensive?

Depending on your mobile provider you may not have to get it unlocked, I didnt with an O2 phone.

Local calls are very inexpensive.

Hallo trer Pinsharp

you don't have nessecerly unlock your mobile! Just use your mobile from UK! I would usuallly have 2 Sim cards, one for Thaiöand where local calls are relatively cheap. One form my Home country whenever I feel like calling up a few friendz and homies back Germany!!!!

I don't know the situation in the UK, but here in Luxembourg you can buy basic, unlocked mobile phones for 44 Euros, and that even includes some credit on the pre-paid SIM card they come with.

Pinsharp are you in UK? If so you can get unlocked mobiles for next to nothing on Ebay. That's what I did. Is was second hand but in very good condition. Works a treat in LOS.

Have you tried the prepaid overseas cards from 1,2call. I used these to call Australia.300bht or 500bht worked out to about 7bht a minute.
Not sure if they work calling england. With a nokia i brought here in Thailand for 1600bht brand new. why bother with unlocking a phone there just as cheap here with the charger that fits thai power points.

no problem with orange phones i use mine when in thailand with a thai sim card from the seven eleven.
i first asked a bar girl who spoke good english and hey presto she sorted it all out for me, never lifted a finger, bless her.
i never had to have it unlocked but it may depend on the make of phone.

wizza,

My wife is on Orange, and gets a new phone with her contract every year. She always passes the old one to our daughter, who always has to get it unlocked (at Mum & Dad's expense - of course).
