Post by pinsharp »

Is there anything that either you can't get or is more expensive in Hua Hin than in the UK ??

Computers!
Buy pc's in the UK and bring it with you as hand luggage.

Maybe some food will do, but some of the other guys out here from UK knows this much better than me.

Don't bring too much clothes. That's cheap.
I intend to live forever - so far so good.

Decent fish and chips
Marmite
Rollmops
Salt n' Vinegar crisps
Boddingtons
Cars
Cameras
Computers and components
A decent Indian curry
Farleys rusks
Aquarium test kits
Internet connections

I could go on however would rather do a "what you can get in HH that you can't in the UK" list!

My grand daughter has let it be known that she will be looking to granny and granddad for a computer to help her with her schoolwork when we visit in a few weeks.

She is Thai, and is not good with English. Her mum's English is perfect, but she is not really computer literate. In such circumstances, would you still recommend bringing a computer from the UK with the bother of having to convert it to Thai etc?

Yes, you'll save a good chunk of change and can pickup a Thai keyboard for a couple of hundred baht. Also Windows XP is multi-lingual and has Thai built in (just need to select it as an option on install).

Thanks Pete - you've just complicated it for me ............ I think.

I did think of the Vista bit, but assumed that if XP did it, Vista would do everything that XP did, but with a few extra whistles and bells. Am I being naive?

The type of machine I would buy would be something like PC World's latest offer, with Vista pre-loaded. Is it just as easy to change if its already loaded please?

I defer to Buksi as have read people like Dell Computer are still loading XP as they're not confident in Vista?

I don't have Vista and perhaps no one over here has it yet? I assume it comes with the same functions as XP but you never know with these guys until you talk to someone who has the system.

Not to fear, you've got 63 days, time enough to get good advice on things before you buy. Pete

One last thought on this from me BB. You're internet connection there must be better than that of the person who will use the machine here.

Vista already has some critical update downloads and if you get XP, there are 2 or 3 very large service packs to download, as well as probably doing something with the anti virus already loaded onto the machine. Really good for you to do all of that there before you leave.

I bought a unit in HK once and didn't have time to do it and it took me weeks to download all of it here on dial-up. Pete

I did a review of Vista here:

http://www.huahinafterdark.com/forum/wi ... 06-15.html

Would stick with XP, unless the user is very familiar with the windows environment, Vista will have problems with hardware drivers for a good year.
