It's not the speed limit that bothers me too much, it's the 3 separate limits on the same stretches of highway. The BIB were useless at enforcing a single speed limit - TIT and people drive at whatever speed they want to anyway. Trying to enforce 3 limits at the same time would blow their minds. Of course, they just won't bother.

With the limit at 120 now, and slow being 100, along with they are not allowed to hold your license till you pay, I think they've given up any enforcement.

Near any metros, and too congested to speed, and on open road, receiver ticket, then bye bye.

Why bother, as most don't pay the camera citation, and if they can't hold your license till you pay ... who is actually going to pay. I know I'll never pay another ticket, if I ever receive one. When in Rome ....

After 2 yrs, they are null & void, so unless they actually start using their computers, and hold up your vehicle registration until paid .... oh well.

What does it mean? Just more unregistered vehicles on the road.

My son was involved with a police officer riding an unregistered police motorcycle (amongst several other offences) a few years back. Riding an unregistered vehicle was considered a minor offence, and wasn't even taken into consideration.

That might have been the plan, again with Oct 2019 news-blip, reiterating the need to pay, but I don't think they actually are doing that yet.

Almost 10 million outstanding tickets, and got to be a good portion of the driving public, even if they have 5 each. Figure 1/3 too young to drive, 1/3 older and don't get cited, leave 20 ish million, so half to 10% are now unregistered vehicles. Find that hard to believe, even for here.

After 2 yrs, that ticket is voided, so citation for unregistered vehicle, if receiving vs paying the 5 tickets in your glove box, within the next year or 2. Not much of an incentive to pay.

Speed limits here are an exercise in futility. Thais will drive how they like because they can, there isn't enough disincentive (endangering lives doesn't count because other road users are less important than the driver).

Locally, I think they like me here, as just got waved through the 1st checkpoint I've seen in a long long time. And they were stopping every scooter except me & the dog in basket.

LOL that reminds me of when I had my rottweiler sat on the front passenger seat of my truck. I put the passenger side window down, where the officer was standing. I've never been waved through so fast

Now on the short trip to Ratchaburi we all have to switch from one system to another about 5 times.

To be honest, I doubt it will make any diffeerence at all. People will still drive at the speed they choose to, as they always have. It just means your legal(ish) for some of the way, whereas before, you generally weren't.

Yes, but at best Thais understanding of the road is confused. This triple barrelled speed limit can only serve to confuse things even more.

I would usually say why fix it, if its not broken? We all know Thai road safety is well fcuk'd, but this 3 tier speed system is crazy for even Thailand. Does any country anywhere else in the world use this crazy system? A system that can only work if it is abused.

I think it will only confuse the farang drivers, as already mentioned, it won’t confuse the Thais because they (mostly) do as they want regardless!!

A 5 minute google failed to highlight any country with different speed limits for different lanes. There are countries that have different minimum speeds for different lanes but the overall speed limit is the same.

I think we’re all in agreement that it’s another crazy idea that will probably make absolutely no difference at all to the way the majority of drivers go about their trip from A to B. No point trying to fathom out the reason why it’s being introduced.
