Looking for good quality Thai food

A friend is coming into town tonight and Mrs m and I are meeting him for dinner. He is staying at the Veranda (by the Marriott). His request for dinner (and I owe him) is quality Thai food.

Knowing him price is not an object and he is a wine lover. So, any recommendations near there?

Good quality Thai food (needed)
Decent wine selection (we could bring our own so not a deal breaker)
Air conditioned (not required but appreciated)
Live music (extra points)

My first thought was Coco 51 but haven't been there in a long time and, while I remember enjoying it, can't remember Thai food quality (I probably ate western).

Khok Khun Ya restaurant. There's a video on YouTube that calls it the best Thai food in Hua Hin. We've eaten there many times. Always excellent food & service, but not a fancy, hi-so place. Try the Boo Lon (warm crab dip), it's our favorite. Just past Big C, same side.

I've been trying to think about this for a while now. Coco 51 was my first thought. Then obviously the big hotels but I've never eaten at Hilton etc. Then the pier places. But actually came to the conclusion that Hua Hin seems short of very good Thai restaurants. If I am wrong please put me right. Baan Itsara maybe but last week on a Monday it with very busy and service a bit crap

Jazz and Bossa Nova live music on Saturdays. You can move on after dinner to any of the music bars in the area of 94 if you want more lively rock etc.

I've held off posting but my brain has got the better of me.

If you want good Thai food, you'll not find it in the 'Hi-So' restaurants that cater for tourists. People come here basing they're experiences of Thai restaurants back home. Like many restaurants catering for 'foreign' foods in the west, they cannot be compared with food here. A tourist will fine good food in expensive restaurants here providing food they are used to back home at a much cheaper price.
If they want to sample 'real' Thai food then restaurants that cater for those will not educate on what Thai food is all about.

If it was me, then I'd take them to a Thai food restaurant that the locals visit.

It reminds me of the people visiting the US and complaining that they can't find a decent 'Chop Suey'.

If they truly want to taste real Thai food then take them to stalls/restaurants that the Thai's use.

Agree with HHTel, cant beat Baan Sammoreang and you can take your own bottles of decent drink.

Thanks everyone. My Friend lives in Chiang Mai so it was quality he was looking for, not so much "real". He ended up changing hotels so we went to Laciana, always good IMHO

It led to an interesting discussion though. I don't thonk much of the Thai food here and I agree, either go cheap with the locals, or spalsh out on some of the usual Thai dishes prepared with really fresh seafood. But in Hua Hin that gets pricey. There's a reason why the seafood places down by Takiap and the fishing villlage are packed at weekends.
