The whole system, signage, and whatever happens in other countries is moot. Thais will drive how they like because they can - so Sombat's dilapidated pineapple truck will still be plodding along in the outside lane doing 50 while Bangkok-bound Benzes barrel up the inside lane doing 140.

Spot on, Buksi. There is no system in Thailand except on paper and relevant signage. All will be ignored.

This from the birds eye view of looking straight down onto the highway. I’m curious now, if it’s the outside lane in the UK, what is it outside of and what is the reference point ? I’ve seen this before on the forum and was confused until I just chalked it up to being a typo / mistake.
I'm just wondering - when you overtake someone in the US, do you overtake them on the outside or the inside (in the normal course of events)?

What we know as the 'outside', 'overtaking', lane, in the US it's the 'inside', 'passing', 'fast' lane.

In the UK we wouldn't say "overtaking on the outside'. We would just say 'overtaking' (or 'undertaking' if allowed). Both words speak for themselves.

I don't know if it's a knock-on effect of these new regulations, but I drove to Ratchaburi and back yesterday, I've never, ever seen so many vehicles in the outside lane, when the 2 inside lanes were virtually empty. Overtaking was almost impossible, with me undertaking most of the way. Saturday afternoon/night traffic is usually the quietest of the week, but my journey both ways took an extra 30 minutes.

If yesterday's journey was the new normal, the outside lane has become the new inside lane. 120 kph has slowed journey times considerably.

As this Forum appears to be a Thailand centric discussion site, it would be a lot less confusing to the rest of us non Poms if the road was discussed as she appears in Thailand!

Inside lane, Outside Lane. Near side, Offside, sounds like a game of football!

Would you rather me call the outside lane the right wing, and the inside lane the left wing? As you want the discussion Thailand centric, tell me what the Thais call it? I will try to remember, and use Thai terminology in future.

Dont know about right wing and left wing, maybe port and starboard would be better!

As for the Thais, from what I see they all call the complete carriageway "MY ROAD"! :)

From what I can find out on google, it's only the US that calls what we know as the inside/nearside/slow lane the 'outside lane'.
No surprise there!

Or maybe the 'I can slow the nation's traffic to a dawdle lane'. The outside lane (right wing) was barely moving at more than 70kph. With a few drivers in the correct lane, even driving sensibly, progress was difficult.

One thing is certain, it should never be called the Fast Lane any more.

These fasts lanes could actually be justification for using your owner installed Big Rig air horn once again...without getting shot at. Don't anyone say those speeding Bangkok people coming back from a weekend in HH don't flash lights and hit the horn in the 120 lane. :D
