Feral cats, native animals enticed with feather boas in Tasmanian forests, with surprising results
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-08-25/ ... /101368380
It seems that just like pets, feral cats — along with an eclectic ensemble of native species — are fascinated by feather boas, a finding that may allow scientists to better study animals in the wild.
Feral cats kill more than a billion native animals a year and have a massive impact on Australia's environment.
To tackle the problem, scientists are trying to understand where cats are and what species they share a habitat with.
Feather boas and other lures are being trialled in Tasmanian forests to entice feral cats and native animals to wander past camera traps.
Camera traps, despite the name, don't restrain animals, but instead take their photos.
"Camera traps are the bomb diggity," explained Alexandra Paton, PhD student at the University of Tasmania.
"They are the new way of monitoring larger vertebrate species, particularly mammals, we've got a network of them across Tasmania … they've been really successful."
Ms Paton's PhD research is trying to establish the effectiveness of different lures.
She set up 64 camera traps over four sites in southern Tasmania and tested the effectiveness of four lures:

Neighbours, who'd have 'em? Not exactly a sight you'd expect to see in the UK.....
Escaped 18ft Python on Roof of House in Chandlers Ford
"Residents have described their shock after an 18ft (5.5m) python was spotted trying to get into a house.
The Burmese python, which had escaped from a nearby property, was seen trying to get through an upstairs window from the roof of a house in Chandler's Ford, Hampshire.
The reptile caused panic when it appeared early on Tuesday.
It was eventually picked up by a neighbour who recognised it and returned it to its owner."

My neighbours have apparently been given similar warnings about me...The RSPCA previously urged owners to keep snakes securely contained during hot weather as the warmer temperatures make them very active and more likely to escape.

This is the way

Thailand’s eerie areoplane graveyard spooks Bangkok residents
https://thethaiger.com/news/bangkok/tha ... -residents (Photos)
The scattered remains of several gutted aeroplanes are believed to be spooking residents living nearby an aircraft graveyard in Bangkok.
US photographer Dax Ward recently visited the site on Ramkhamhaeng Road in Bangkok and made known the spot has an eerie feel to it while taking snaps of the abandoned aircraft believed to be worth over 3 trillion baht.
The graveyard is home to a 747 and two smaller MD-82 planes, which lie in bits. The space has become a cemetery for planes since January of 2010 when the nose sections of two Boeing 747s were left abandoned there.
Four years later, two MD-82 jetliners, formerly operated by Orient Thai Airlines, appeared in the junkyard. The MD-82 model was involved in a fatal crash at Phuket International Airport in 2007 where 89 people died. A year later those aircraft were joined by a 747.
If the aeroplane graveyard isn’t weird enough, several Thai families have moved into the skeletons of the planes and turned them into makeshift homes.
The families said it’s much better than living on the street. They earn money by stripping parts off the aircraft and selling them at a nearby recycling station. They also charge ghoulish visitors an entry fee between 100 baht to 800 baht to walk around the abandoned area.
It is believed the families living there have some sort of deal with the landowner to stay on the site.
Ward revealed there were plans to turn the area into an entertainment complex but it never took off.
The photographer said…
“The planes were supposedly placed there a few years ago by a foreign investor who wanted to create a special outdoor bar using the fuselage as a stage for the bands and service rooms for the bar crew.
“The project was a fiasco and the foreign investor left the site as it is.
“As far as I know, there are currently no plans to move them, although the land upon which they rest is quite expensive.”
The former computer scientist, who has been living in Bangkok since 2007, added…
“It is very eerie in the graveyard. There are children’s toys and other personal objects scattered around, left by people who have stayed there for whatever reason, almost making it feel like a crash site.
“In Thai culture places like this are often seen as haunted, even if no one has actually passed away at the location.”
One way to get to the aeroplane graveyard is to take a canal taxi that plies Klong Saen Saep. Take an eastbound boat to the last stop, which is Wat Sriboonruang on Ramkamhaeng Soi 101. From there, walk to the main road, turn right, and walk two blocks. The spot is at Soi 101.

Holmfield Hum: Village mystery noise cannot be identified - council
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-leeds-63155863
The source of a mystery humming sound which has plagued residents in a West Yorkshire village for two years cannot be identified, a council has said.
Some people in Holmfield, near Halifax, said the noise had "tortured" them in their homes and damaged their health.
Known as the "Holmfield Hum", it prompted an investigation to try to establish where it was coming from.
Calderdale Council said it had left "no stone unturned" but could not "evidence a statutory noise nuisance".
The authority said its "extensive investigation" into the possible cause of the noise had now come to an end.
It added that a noise consultant's independent investigation also reached the same conclusion.
'Highly complex case'
Councillor Jenny Lynn, cabinet member for public services and communities, said she understood the impact the alleged noises had had on some and investigations could be restarted if new evidence came to light.
She said: "This has been a highly complex case with many challenges, including the area's landscape, the mixed residential and commercial urban environment, the fact that not everyone can hear the reported noises, and because low-frequency noise is notoriously hard to detect across the country."
Speaking last year, resident Yvonne Conner said the low-frequency noise was affecting her health, and she had to change her working hours because of a lack of rest.
She said: "Residents have been unable to relax in their own home for nearly a year. The noise is continuous day and night."
The investigation has been "complex and thorough", said the council, with staff working day and night to try to detect the reported noise, visiting people's homes and businesses and appointing an independent noise consultant.
Ms Lynn said the council did not "doubt that some residents are experiencing noise" and that it would regularly review the situation, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
She added: "We know this is not the outcome that the complainants were hoping for, but we have exhausted all current lines of inquiry."
