In the first hockey game I saw, Gretsky was playing for L.A. A friend had front-row seats in a box. It was easily the most exciting sporting event I'd ever seen.

David Ortiz 'humbled' to lead 2022 National Baseball Hall of Fame class

https://www.upi.com/Sports_News/MLB/202 ... 658683522/

July 24 (UPI) -- The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., welcomed its 2022 class, headlined by longtime Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz on Sunday.

Ortiz, 46, thanked God, as well as his friends and family and the organizers of the Hall of Fame in his induction speech on Sunday afternoon.

"This is such an incredible day, an incredible honor and I'm so humbled to be on this stage right now," he said.

The power hitter known as "Big Papi" was born in the Dominican Republic and began his career with the Minnesota Twins before spending 14 seasons with the Red Sox that included 10 All-Star appearances, three World Series Champions as well as World Series and ALCS MVP awards.

He totaled 541 home runs for his career, the 17th most in MLB history. Ortiz hit .286 over his 20 seasons and ranks No. 8 all time in extra base hits.

On Sunday, Ortiz thanked the coaches and executives that he said helped guide his career.

"Before I was Big Papi, before the Red Sox, before the Twins I was just a kid playing ball in the Dominican Republic. To all my coaches from winter ball, minor league and the big league I could not have done it without you," he said.

He also gave thanks to Major League Baseball for "all the support you have given me throughout my professional career."

"This game is so important here in America and around the world. Thank you for all the support you have given baseball as a sport so that it continues to be part of our culture and part of the heart of all the fans worldwide," said Ortiz.

Other inductees on Sunday included Tony Oliva, the 1964 Rookie of the Year, eight-time ALL-Star and three-time batting champion with the Minnesota Twins; Jim Kaat, the 16-time Gold Glove winner who won the World Series with the 1982 St. Louis Cardinals; Minnie Minoso, a nine-time All-Star and the first Black Cuban to play for the Chicago White Sox; Gil Hodges an eight-time All-Star, three-time Gold Glove winner and two-time World Series champion with the Dodgers and Mets; Bud Fowler, the first Black player to integrate into White professional leagues in 1878 and Buck O'Neil a player, coach, manager, scout and executive over an eight-decade baseball career that began in the Negro Leagues and saw him become the MLB's first Black coach with the Chicago Cubs in 1962.

NASCAR and IndyCar intersect at Indianapolis extravaganza

https://apnews.com/article/sports-auto- ... 08778fd48d

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Now is the time to tune into American motorsports, on display all weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where NASCAR and IndyCar intersect with both series embroiled in turmoil.

Two-time IndyCar champion Josef Newgarden was cleared to compete on the road course on Indy’s hallowed grounds after successfully completing Friday morning practice and passing a third medical evaluation. The driver from Nashville collapsed and hit his head on Sunday at Iowa Speedway about 90 minutes after he’d crashed while leading the race.

He said he assumes he suffered a concussion when he hit his head in the motorhome lot but spent the first part of the week somewhat isolated in an attempt to heal so he could race Saturday. Newgarden is chasing a third title.

“I really was very motivated to be here this weekend; I knew if we weren’t in this race, it was going to be very difficult to stay in this championship fight,” Newgarden said. “That was the end for me. I know that we have to be in the race, so whatever I have to do to be fit and prepared is No. 1 on my plate.”

Kurt Busch, meanwhile, will miss his second consecutive NASCAR race because of concussion-like symptoms following a crash last weekend at Pocono. Chase Elliott heads into Sunday’s race as NASCAR’s most recent winner, but he inherited the victory in an unprecedented disqualification to Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch.

Hamlin and Busch crossed the finish line 1-2, but their Toyotas failed postrace inspection and earned the first Cup Series disqualification since April 17, 1960. Emanuel Zervakis was stripped of his victory at Wilson Speedway in North Carolina because of an oversized fuel tank.

NASCAR is still five races away from its postseason, a 10-week knockout round to crown its champion. IndyCar, meanwhile, has five races remaining in its season and an incredibly tight six-driver title race. Reigning champion Alex Palou is sixth in the standings, 44 points behind Indianapolis 500 winner Marcus Ericsson, but he’s being sued by Chip Ganassi Racing over his desire to move to McLaren Racing next season.

Palou said ahead of Saturday’s race that he still believes he can win a second consecutive title this year, and that he will be in the McLaren family in 2023. Team owner Chip Ganassi seemed exasperated.

“Good for him,” Ganassi told The Associated Press on Friday. “I’m not making any statements. I have no quotes to give.”

Newgarden also took the silent approach until after he’d qualified fifth for Saturday’s race. His hard crash while leading the race — and the IndyCar standings until a broken suspension stopped his attempt at sweeping the Iowa doubleheader — dropped him into a tie for third in the standings and forced Team Penske to put Santino Ferrucci on standby in case Newgarden couldn’t drive.

IndyCar’s medical staff felt certain that Newgarden had passed all critical tests before he was medically cleared in Iowa, and if he did suffer a concussion, it came later when he collapsed in the parking lot. He visited a specialist this week, was re-evaluated at IMS on Thursday and then had yet another examination after logging the second-fastest laps in Friday morning practice.

Ferrucci seemed to have already been waved off by Penske on Thursday night when he tweeted he was thankful that Newgarden was healthy. Only problem? He incorrectly spelled it “Joseph” and Newgarden didn’t like that one bit.

“It’s Josef(asterisk),” he replied on Twitter. “At Penske, we care about details.”

It was an aggressive response from Newgarden, who seemed to be staking claim on both his race car and his spot in the title race. Had he not been cleared to race, it likely would have ended his championship chances.

Newgarden said his reply to Ferrucci was in good fun.

“But from a factual standpoint, you know, the details do matter,” Newgarden said. “It is important to remember here at Team Penske, we have a working style and we like to stick to it. I’m just trying to help the next batter up.”

WHAT ABOUT THE OVAL?

NASCAR last year worked with Indianapolis track owner Roger Penske to shift its race from the famed oval to the road course as part of this blockbuster weekend.

But the Brickyard 400 was considered a NASCAR crown jewel despite waning interest from its 1994 debut through 27 runnings. Penske thought the move to the road course — and a shared weekend with IndyCar — would boost the importance of the event.

The race will likely be on the road course again next year, Penske confirmed this weekend. This year’s version is a 14-turn, 2.439-mile paved course.

BYRON FIRE

Hendrick Motorsports dodged disaster when a generator fire was extinguished before it damaged the Chevrolet that William Byron will race Sunday.

The team sent a backup transporter from North Carolina to the speedway on Friday, one day after the flames erupted inside the No. 24 truck as it waited to enter the speedway.

“A huge thank you to everyone who helped out with the 24 hauler today including the track, NASCAR, the local fire department and other team hauler drivers,” Byron wrote on Twitter. “Everyone jumped in and helped our team out today and that support means a lot to all of us on the 24 team.”

The Cup garage did not open until Friday afternoon; cars are on the track Saturday morning before the IndyCar race.

Some NASCAR info:

The cars are currently powered by EFI V8 engines, since 2012, after 62 years using carburetion as engine fuel feed with compacted graphite iron blocks and pushrod valvetrains actuating two-valves per cylinder, and are limited to a 358 cubic inch (5.9-liter) displacement.

The engines in today's NASCAR race cars produce upward of 750 horsepower, and they do it without turbochargers, superchargers or particularly exotic components.

A NASCAR car can cost anywhere from $180,000 to $344,000 to build, with additional costs for tires and maintenance not factored in here. The cars are built with high-quality materials to meet NASCAR's safety and performance specifications. The costs over the season are in the millions of dollars.

In the year 1987, Bill Elliott, a record 16-times winner of the NASCAR's Most Popular Driver Award, clocked an insane 212.809 mph in his Thunderbird. This qualifying lap at Talladega still stands as the top official speed in NASCAR history.

Baker still holds the record for fastest Daytona 500 speed with an average of 177.602 mph. Bill Elliott is the only driver to come close to Baker's record. Elliott won the 1987 race with an average speed of 176.263 mph two years after taking the title at 172.265 mph.

Bills, Rams to kick off 272-game NFL regular season

https://www.upi.com/Sports_News/NFL/202 ... 662567500/

Sept. 8 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles Rams will host the Buffalo Bills to open the NFL's 272-game regular season schedule Thursday on the same field on which they claimed a Super Bowl title less than seven months ago.

The Bills are 2.5-point favorites in the opener, which will kick off at 8:20 p.m. EDT from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. The game will air on NBC.

"We understand there will be a lot of people watching," Bills quarterback Josh Allen told reporters earlier this week.

"Going to play the defending champions and going to watch them raise their banner will be an interesting feeling."

Allen is the favorite to win NFL MVP honors. The Bills, Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers own the best odds to win the Super Bowl.

Referring to Allen and the Bills, Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey said, "They're good, but we're good, too, over here."

"We'll see him Thursday. We're going to play football, but I ain't going to sit here and boost nobody up, nobody. ... We are going to go out there Thursday and we going to put our best effort out there and do what we got to do."

Another 28 teams will take the field for 14 games from Sunday afternoon through Sunday night. The Seattle Seahawks will host the Denver Broncos in the Week 1 finale Monday in Seattle.

Two Week 1 games will be NBC broadcasts. Seven games will air on CBS and another six will air on Fox. ESPN will present the Monday Night Football broadcast.

Amazon Prime Video's weekly Thursday Night Football broadcasts will start in Week 2, replacing NBC in that slot.

The storylines for Week 1 include: revenge games, with several players facing their former teams; division rivalries; and debuts for top 2022 NFL Draft picks.

Debuts, revenge

The Bills fell a few wins short of meeting the Rams in the Super Bowl last season, with a Jan. 23 overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round of the playoffs. They will get their chance to battle the reigning champions in what will likely be one of the most-watched games of the season.

Veteran quarterback Baker Mayfield will face his former team when his Carolina Panthers host the Cleveland Browns at 1 p.m. Sunday in Charlotte, N.C. The Panthers are 2.5-point favorites.

Fellow quarterback Joe Flacco will face his former team when his New York Jets host the Baltimore Ravens at the same time in East Rutherford, N.J. The Ravens are 7-point favorites.

The final revenge game will take place Monday night, when Russell Wilson's Broncos will face his former team, the Seahawks, in primetime in Seattle. The Broncos are 6.5-point favorites.

Linebacker Travon Walker, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, will make his regular-season debut with the Jacksonville Jaguars at 1 p.m. Sunday against the Washington Commanders. His Jaguars are are 2.5-point underdogs.

Quarterback Marcus Mariota will make his Atlanta Falcons debut at the same time against the division rival New Orleans Saints. The Saints are 5.5-point favorites.

Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, the No. 2 pick in the draft, will debut for the Detroit Lions at 1 p.m. against the Philadelphia Eagles. Wide receiver A.J. Brown also will make his Eagles debut in that matchup. The Eagles are 4-point favorites.

Veteran quarterback Matt Ryan will make his Indianapolis Colts debut at 1 p.m. against the Houston Texans. The Colts are 7-point favorites.

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill will debut for his new team at the same time against the New England Patriots. The Dolphins are 3.5-point favorites.

Like Hill and Brown, fellow wide receiver Davante Adams also was traded this off-season and will debut for a new team in Week 1.

Adams' Raiders will take on the Los Angeles Chargers at 4:25 p.m. Sunday in Inglewood. The Raiders are 3.5-point underdogs.

Reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers will quarterback the Green Bay Packers against the Minnesota Vikings at the same time in Minneapolis. The Packers are slight favorites.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady, who walked away from football this off-season before he decided to return to the game, will battle the Dallas Cowboys at 8:20 p.m. Sunday on NBC. Brady's Buccaneers are 2.5-point favorites.

Brady owns the third-best odds to win NFL MVP honors this season. Allen, Rodgers, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert are among the other MVP favorites.

The Bills and Buccaneers own the best odds to win the Super Bowl, which will be Feb. 12 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.
