I'm guessing most of those krathongs are organic and will become fish food.

They are, but if you look at the photos of the rubbish, it is all being removed from the lake, and broken down, I didn't take a photo of the bin lorry, but there was a team of ladies breaking every bin/bag load down into recyclables, etc. The Tessebahn are being incredibly efficient in this clean-up.

Today's update on the clearance operation, apart from the odd straggler, the lake is now clear with the South end being the exception. At the Southern end, there was evidence of clean-up going on i.e. many spent Krathongs drying on the walkway, and 4 big bags of recycled Krathongs. We walked around close to midday, so I guess lunch break or sheltering from the midday sun.

Final update on the Krathong clean-up operation at Khao Tao Lake. I've not been for a few days because I've been away. I was pleasantly surprised this morning to see all of the debris gone from the water. Yes, of course there is the odd bit that has been missed, but I think 99.9% complete is a fair assessment.

  • I noticed the latest vandalism/theft yesterday. A few months ago solar powered lights were fixed about every 10 yards around the lake on the North, West and South banks. Yesterday, somebody had stripped the North and West banks of the lights.
About 20% of the missing lights have now been replaced. I guess the rest will be on order.
About 18 months on, they have found a permanent solution to the lighting problem on the West and Southern banks of the lake, Every 18 (Big Boy) paces they have already installed what look to be solar powered lampposts along the Western bank, and there are markings indicating they will be installing along the Southern bank very soon. An excellent addition to the lake.

I know this is Thailand, and anything is possible, but I don't think anybody will be stealing these too soon.

The next batch of 15 solar powered lampposts have arrived for installation.

You'll have to watch and record how quickly they disappear.

These are fairly big brutes, but only secured with 4 studs and nuts.

I would think the resale value is in stealing the solar stuff at the top.

We delayed our walk around the lake today until this evening to see how well the new lights were working. They were very effective. A beautiful evening stroll - I think our dog appreciated the after dark touch as well. I also had an opportunity to take photos of Rama IX's monument from a few different angles. A beautiful red moon obliged by getting in on the act as well. Apologies for the image clarity, but I only do point and shoot

It's that time of year again when the lake starts to turn to slime. It usually lasts 1 to 2 weeks, and then disappears again.

It may coincide with the frog mating season. Tadpoles eat that stuff endlessly. Maybe that's why it disappears in a few weeks? :D

Really? I never knew that. If the tadpoles are beneath that stuff, that could be why I've never seen a tadpole in Thailand.

You got a' have a tadpole before ya have a frog.

We've got large 50 gallon Burmese water pots here scattered around under rain drain pipes to catch the water. Each year a variety of frogs wait to lay their eggs in the water until the algae appears. The tadpoles hatch and eat the stuff up in a few days. If I want them to survive, and eventually jump out of the pots as frogs, I have to supplement their diet with leaf lettuce for about 2 months. Almost turns into a pet raising exercise!

Hopefully my payback is them eating these damn Dengue filled mosquitos!
