Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
Just a question out of curiosity. I've seen those charge stations, and have often wondered, "Do they only charge BMWs, or do they charge any electric car?" i.e. is it like Samsung or Apple phones - do they have special connectors.

Re: Electric Cars
This one has me confused. Does it mean they are set up to only recharge BMW's, of is it just sponsored by BMW and all EV's can be charged?

Re: Electric Cars
I'm only guessing that it's specifically for BMW's.

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
That's an unexpected complication. If auto manufacturers start to fill up the landscape with chargers just for their brand to only fit their plug, it 's going to be a mess.

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
It has to do with which ever type charging plug is used. BMW use a type 2, which can charge either AC or DC, the car electronics switching to what ever is plugged in.

Most of Asia is using a type 1 plug for public charging stations.

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
Don't know about that, but most CS (charging stations) have 2 or 3 different plugs.
AFAIK, i think Tesla is the only one with dedicated CS for theirs only, though also read that has changed in some countries.
For those actually curious, could check PlugShare site, or if having ChargeLome app ...
... o wait, if having that app, you know it's BS than CS only have 1 plug.
Here's what's available at the closest non-MG CS from us southbound at Bangchak: And if going northbound, at PTT:

Curious, and apparently our local MG dealer's CS is down for maintenance, but the one at the Shell station:

Looking at photos of station, seems to have 2 vendors:MG

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
How do those listed "non-networked" charging stations charge for the power usage?
https://www.zap-map.com/charge-points/c ... rs-speeds/
The choice of connectors depends on the charger type (socket) and the vehicle’s inlet port. On the charger-side, rapid chargers use CHAdeMO, CCS (Combined Charging Standard) or Type 2 connectors. Fast and slow units usually use Type 2, Type 1, Commando, or 3-pin plug outlets.
On the vehicle-side, European EV models (Audi, BMW, Renault, Mercedes, VW and Volvo) tend to have Type 2 inlets and the corresponding CCS rapid standard, while Asian manufacturers (Nissan and Mitsubishi) prefer a Type 1 and CHAdeMO inlet combination.
This doesn’t always apply however, with increasing numbers of Asian manufacturers switching to European standards for cars sold in the region. For example, Hyundai and Kia plug-in models all feature Type 2 inlets, and the pure-electric models use Type 2 CCS. The Nissan Leaf has switched to Type 2 AC charging for its second-generation model, but unusually has retained CHAdeMO for DC charging.
Most EVs are supplied with two cables for slow and fast AC charging; one with a three-pin plug and the other with a Type 2 connector charger-side, and both fitted with a compatible connector for the car’s inlet port. These cables enable an EV to connect to most untethered charge points, while use of tethered units require using the cable with the correct connector type for the vehicle.
Examples include the Nissan Leaf MkI which is typically supplied with a 3-pin-to-Type 1 cable and a Type 2-to-Type 1 cable. The Renault Zoe has a different charging set up and comes with a 3-pin-to-Type 2 and/or Type 2-to-Type 2 cable. For rapid charging, both models use the tethered connectors which are attached to the charging units.

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
This starts to sound like the EU battle with Apple and others to only allow/sell a universal USB and power plug that fits everything.

Is it feasible to put a solar panel on the roof or a car for continuous charging? That would solve the charging problem.

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
I believe there are a few models that do have "Solar Cells" - I remember Audi talking about it, but whether or not it's been used on a large scale, I don't know.handdrummer wrote: ↑Tue Jan 03, 2023 6:57 pm Is it feasible to put a solar panel on the roof or a car for continuous charging? From my understanding, the technology is not there yet in that the cells don't produce sufficient energy - especially in places like the UK!

Some interesting info in this long article.
Chinese automakers launch into Australia with lower-cost EVs as local uptake is about to accelerate
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-01-03/ ... /101794194
Henry He is one of 8 million people in China who drive electric vehicles (EVs).
The Shanghai resident bought his first EV in 2015 for about $20,000, to save money.
"A major reason was that the rego was issued free of charge by the Shanghai local government when buying an EV," the 46-year-old told ABC News.
China's sales of new energy cars — which include battery-electric, plug-in hybrid and fuel-cell vehicles — are expected to double in 2022, reaching 6 million. The majority of the cars are battery electric vehicles.
"The Chinese battery manufacturing is dominating the world's market – more than 60 per cent of car batteries are currently produced in China."
"The cost of manufacturing an EV in China is lower than other countries, given locally made batteries, cheaper labour costs and a comprehensive supply chain for all the car components," he explained.
