I’ve been interested in cars since a young lad (more than 60 years ago) and back in those days my dad used to let me drive his car on the very deserted roads on the Isle of Sheppy from about 13/14 years old, with him sat next to me. Although I admire some of the cars included in this attachment, I can’t honestly say that I’ve ever really wanted to own one (possible because most would be too expensive), but they’d be wasted on me - a bit like owning a Tesla, I wouldn’t be willing or able to exploit its performance on a regular basis so why have one?pharvey wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 7:08 pm And just for the "environmentalists" amongst ushttps://www.goodwood.com/grr/road/news/ ... Well yes, the cars mentioned in the link are hardly practical - neither are Teslas for that matter, though the latter with a bit more range and a little dip in price would be very appealing. I did drive a Model S which was very impressive (though somewhat out of my price range).Dannie Boy wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 9:32 pmI’ve been interested in cars since a young lad (more than 60 years ago) and back in those days my dad used to let me drive his car on the very deserted roads on the Isle of Sheppy from about 13/14 years old, with him sat next to me. As for the "Supercars", I remember some years back seeing an obviously spoilt (and obnoxious) rich kid in Windsor who had got the Lamborghini he was driving stuck on a "sleeping policeman" - had me giggling for quite some time that one!! Brings a smile to my face to this day I must admit!!

I would be happy with just half of that 875k kms, as that's about the amount of kms I put on the 3 ICEs I owned so far in TH over 20 yrs.STEVE G wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 4:30 pm 875k km is an interesting number for people who say EV's are too expensive because if I drove my present diesel pickup that far it would cost over 3 million baht in fuel at todays prices.
You can get a Chinese EV and a solar charger in Thailand for less than 1.2 million baht.
As you state, just savings from petrol alone, would easily be the cost of another new BEV. Add 20yr of no oil changes and tune ups, and BEVs just about pay for themselves.
400k kms ÷ 14 kpL X ฿35 = ฿1 M
Our ZS was ฿949, book value now ฿960 - petrol savings equals 'free' car + change

Wishful thinking I would say at this stage - hopefully this performance will be available in the (not too distant) future.........KhunLA wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 11:49 pmI would be happy with just half of that 875k kms, as that's about the amount of kms I put on the 3 ICEs I owned so far in TH over 20 yrs.STEVE G wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 4:30 pm 875k km is an interesting number for people who say EV's are too expensive because if I drove my present diesel pickup that far it would cost over 3 million baht in fuel at todays prices.

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
Far from wishful, as that's only half of the cycle life they estimate. And that still leaves the battery @ 80% capacity.
Need to take the ICE blinders off. EVs cost the some now as many popular ICEs. Perform better, last longer, and cheaper to operate, especially in TH. Add solar to that, and you save even more, not just for the EV. I've eliminated 2 of my largest monthly bills, aside from food.
Now have to pay for internet, water, and 40 baht conx fee to PEA (JIC as back up). Our total mandatory monthly bills
Oh yea, car insurance next year, after free year expires. That leaves a lot of extra pocket money.

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
This seems like a sensible article regarding the adoption to EV’s, recognising the considerable challenges in car/battery manufacturers being able to obtain sufficient raw materials required for the batteries.

No surprise auto makers want to keep ICEs & hybrids on the road as long as possible. Maintaining them is a huge money cow for them.Dannie Boy wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 10:32 am This seems like a sensible article regarding the adoption to EV’s, recognising the considerable challenges in car/battery manufacturers being able to obtain sufficient raw materials required for the batteries.

Lithium, counter to the fossil fuel BS, is quite abundant, AND, in countries that don't have horrendous work condition or use child labor ... more fossil fuel BS.

Devil's Advocate ... equal time for the Anti-EV'er. Here's a link, and yes, extracting most things from the earth isn't eco-friendly. Simply need to decide on the lesser of the evils ... or walk, cycle it for transport.

I’m certainly not anti BEV’s, being an owner of a PHEV, but this article suggests that there may be an imbalance between supply and demand of lithium as early as 2025, so things may not be quite as rosy as you suggest KhunLA

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
Good thing we have ours already ...
Unless a battery pack oops after warranty (8 yrs), then not much for us to worry about, and the EV version, will have saved us quite a bit vs the ICE version ZS we had, while being under warranty.
If getting the 180k kms under warranty, the ICE got about 10 kpL
180k kms ÷ 10 kpL X ฿35 = ฿630k
Again, no oil changes every 10k kms, or tune ups ~฿100k more saved.
Still not seeing any downside from having BEVs ... for us.
Surly 8 yrs down the line, swapping out 1 or a few bad battery cells will be no different than the ease of swapping out an ICE motor or trans. With plenty of shops doing.

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
I spotted one of these BYDs in town today, it looked pretty impressive and has high specs for 1.2 million baht.
That's a lot less than you would pay for a comparable EV in Europe.

Obviously can’t comment on the quality but spec wise and size wise it looks pretty good - similar size to a Mazda CX-5. Certainly if I was in the market for a new car I’d give one a look.STEVE G wrote: ↑Wed Jan 25, 2023 5:31 pm I spotted one of these BYDs in town today, it looked pretty impressive and has high specs for 1.2 million baht.

Similarly in terms of size and Spec, they had a couple of Haval Jolion SUV’s (these are hybrid rather than electric) on show outside Makro last week - I only gave one a cursory look, but at B999,000 for the top spec Ultra, it looked quite impressive and more so than the MG equivalent.

I found a UK review of the BYD on Autocar - it’s not a full test drive but they were reasonably impressed with what they saw.Dannie Boy wrote: ↑Wed Jan 25, 2023 5:43 pmObviously can’t comment on the quality but spec wise and size wise it looks pretty good - similar size to a Mazda CX-5. They’re definitely late to the table, but with their huge resources it may be that they won’t invest in yesterday’s technology but tomorrow’s - it wouldn’t surprise me to see them at the front of the pack by the end of the decade!!STEVE G wrote: ↑Fri Jan 27, 2023 8:02 am Toyota CEO replaced amid electric vehicle movement:
