Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
A very, very, small reduction in car pollution? And of course the customers (many of whom will be Thai nationals) are getting bang up to date technology at reasonably affordable prices
Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
It's a free trade deal, it covers a lot of things, presumably Thailand found it worth signing, either for trade or political reasons.
Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
With respect, Thai citizens are the last thing a Thai Govt. would consider under a FTA.Dannie Boy wrote: ↑Mon Mar 27, 2023 4:33 pm A very, very, small reduction in car pollution? Anyhow, it started in 2003 and mainly covered fruit and veg, with 188 tariffs cut to zero overnight. It's been developed since.
'Many Thai garlic, longan and other fruit and vegetable producers, especially in the North, lost their livelihoods because they could not compete against the cheap flood of Chinese imports. In fact, despite government reassurances, only Thai cassava exports went up. Investigations showed that Thai produce entering China was left to rot at point of entry, by local warehouse operators, so that it could not actually be commercialised'.
A biaised report, maybe, but it seems like businesses such as CP were the main beneficeries.

Anyway, it is what it is and I suspect the main beneficeries in respect of EV's are the Chinese.
And if you go to the main fruit market in Rangsit and visit the imported fruit section, you will see all those chinese imports in all their glory. Back in January, I bought a crate of those little oranges that are around, again, at the moment, for 200 baht. A huge saving over what is charged in the shops. Of course, it helps if you like the oranges!

Talk is cheap
Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
People come up with new reasons not to buy EVs by the day but the potential inequalities of a Thai-Chinese trade deal wouldn't be a showstopper for me.
To be honest, if mankind had put half as much effort into evolving cars as they have into thinking of reasons not to, we'd all be hovering around like the Jetsons by now!

I completely disagree with that Steve - the developments in car technology over the past 20 years has been incredible and exponentially much greater than in the previous 100 years!!

Sorry Steve - have to agree with DB on this. Although, I do wish development into batteries had been made far earlier.Dannie Boy wrote: ↑Tue Mar 28, 2023 7:53 am I completely disagree with that Steve - the developments in car technology over the past 20 years has been incredible and exponentially much greater than in the previous 100 years!!

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
I suspect and certainly hope, that battery technology advancement is coming soon - hopefully within the next 2-3 years, then the problem will be first and foremost the charging infrastructure, already lagging and will only get worse unless there’s a dramatic investment (that won’t price it out of use)!!
Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
I sure like what Steve G said as that makes sense once the Solar panels are paid off then it does become FREE energy. Nothing is really FREE. I'm skeptical because I think there are many more parts to the issue that have not yet been solved. I'm not willing to bank on the future that these issues will be positively resolved until I see it. Lets follow Norway to see how it plays out over the years. I have a friend who lives there and likes his EV but also has a diesel car for longer trips.
Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
Yes, as to EVs and hybrids but the average ICE car today isn't really that much different to the Wolesley 16/60 my Father had when I was a kid.pharvey wrote: ↑Tue Mar 28, 2023 8:27 amSorry Steve - have to agree with DB on this. Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
In terms of safety, they are a million miles apart and of course new cars have so many things (that are not essential but make life more enjoyable) - I think a Wolsey 16/60 probably had a heater but that’s about it!!STEVE G wrote: ↑Tue Mar 28, 2023 9:16 amYes, as to EVs and hybrids but the average ICE car today isn't really that much different to the Wolesley 16/60 my Father had when I was a kid.pharvey wrote: ↑Tue Mar 28, 2023 8:27 amSorry Steve - have to agree with DB on this. Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
An interesting (but somewhat disappointing) article regarding battery development - maybe tomorrow is in fact the day after?

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
Bitch of a car... Ugly as hell and what, 2ltr 50 BHP? My first was a VW Passat, 1.6 Petrol around 95 BHP. I now drive (almost) a Diesel 2.4 with 255 BHP, the LHG has a Q3, 1.4 ltr Petrol pushing 200 BHP - aside from myself, all look great and perform well!
Cars and engineering have come on in leaps and bounds - the technology is there for the EV's and batteries, bring it on!
And stop extracting the urine Steve!!

[EDIT] I take it back, mine is 2.144

Along with the EV, which will realize a quicker ROI for solar system.brianks wrote: ↑Tue Mar 28, 2023 9:13 am I sure like what Steve G said as that makes sense once the Solar panels are paid off then it does become FREE energy. We contracted new house build, and at same time, bought new MG ZS ICE (2020), as EV version was a bit more than I was willing to spend, as skeptical myself on EVs, part ignorance (a lot) and a wait & see atitude.
House was getting solar any way, as that ROI was a given, just size of system was only question, and a couple options to pick before house done.
Fast forward to 2022 and MG did a very nice upgrade to the EV version, plus the gov't incentive (฿240k), along with solar system, and not so ignorant anymore...getting the EV was a no brainer. We charge almost exclusively with excess solar from the system. Was not planned, and didn't add to the cost of the system ... so 'FREE' in my book. Obviously not plan to by an EV, 2 yrs after just buying ICE. Other cars we kept for 5-7 on average.
We're using 20+kWh a day, and hot weather is just kicking in. Along with ฿3000 a month we used to pay for petrol, and we're have ฿9k+ a month saved with solar vs using PEA & PTT. That's a quick ROI, from 4-7 years, depending how many out & abouts we do, and charging on the road. We do about 20k kms a year, half on the road.
Our last PEA bill:

Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
Although this is an EV (a Nissan Leaf) the car is being trialled in the UK in an autonomous self-driving development.
Can you imagine being driven in a car festooned with such technology?

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
In the UK no one wants an EV on the used car market. They are suffering catastrophic depreciation as a result. Just avoid them.
