Dragon Boat Racing, Pak Nam Pran

Post by Big Boy »

23rd April 2023 - somewhere in Pak Nam Pran.

I went to this event many years ago, but struggled to find a good vantage point from which to observe. If anybody has any good tips, I'd be grateful.

Last time, I basically gatecrashed a fish dockside party, and stood like the proverbial spare prick, feeling very awkward taking photos as the party proceeded around me. I didn't speak Thai, and the didn't speak English. I enjoyed it all the same.

Come on BB - admit it, you're just not going to be able to do the VOLUME! :D

Many years since I went there, impossible to park, very loud (as is the norm), but in all honesty, very enjoyable!! :thumb:

Zero help for you I know as is my wont.... :duck:

I don't remember volume, and parking was easy. I was obviously in the wrong place, as I suspected. Where was your vantage point please?

Are we talking the same event? Crikey, no place to park, load speakers galore....

:? It is the Dragon Boat racing :?

Or do you mean you've mistaken it for the Khao Tao event , which is in November?

Nope, I did mean Dragon Boat, but noticed the Add saying "Long Boat", so just thought.....

Anywho, as mentioned it's been a long time since I was there. :thumb:

Have you checked Barrys' old place? That's where we practiced and competed many moons ago. I don't know what's there now but it would be a good place to watch. Not on the finish line, though.

It's not the racing I'm looking for so much, just the overall scene - very colourful boats, the colour of the crews, etc. I didn't realise you could watch it from Barry's old place, or there's a small marina near there as well. Thank you, I'll nip down to check that side of the river out.

Well. I'm just back from a reconnaissance visit. I've got less idea where it's happening now than when I first posted in March. I found the big fair that is going on at the same time, but not a clue as to where the boat racing might be taking place. I went out to the marina and Barry's old place, but no information anywhere.

I've found a couple of references to here https://www.google.com/maps/place/Tha+L ... F1hm51x_sr , but apart from a few Thai flags on the river bank, there is no indication that an event will take place on Sunday. Beside that, there will be huge parking problems.

2 days to the event, does anybody have any reliable information please?

Well, if you can't find the boats you can always go to the seafood festival instead. ImageImageImage

Yes, I found the fair. Quite impressive, even had a ghost train - first I've seen in Thailand, but unfortunately no sign of where the boats will be.

Family visit to the festival at Paknampran last night. In the daytime it looked pretty unimpressive. However it lit up at night and was bigger than it looked in daylight.
Lots of food. Large stage for visiting entertainment. Lots of food. A couple of beer tents. Plenty of rides for the kids - dodgems, electric bikes, paddle boats, ferris wheel, one 'white knuckle ride' and more.
Spent an enjoyable few hours there. Prices very reasonable. Well worth a visit. Last day is today (Sunday).
