I’ve just watched this programme about electric cars and everything associated with EV’s. I found it absolutely fascinating and recommend it to you, albeit that it’s focussed almost exclusively on the issues in the UK (although most of them are generic issues wherever you live), plus, if you live outside the UK you’ll need a VPN to watch it.

I would urge anyone on this forum to watch this video on YouTube before buying an EV:
Channel is Auto Expert John Cadogan, released August 3rd, titled ‘the truth about EVs and fire risk in our cities’.

Attacking the messenger rather than facing the message. I do enjoy the Night Crawlers thread, 👍.

Another article about solid state batteries - nothing really new, but in another article I read yesterday (but can’t find now) the single biggest impact of introducing SS Batteries will be the almost instant devaluation of all Lithium ion EV cars. The new SS Batteries are claimed to be significantly safer, offer double the range, much faster charging times and greater longevity. No wonder that in many countries, the sale of EV’s is starting to slow - people are obviously catching on to the reality that the car they buy today will lose a big chunk of value once SS Battery EV’s eventually hit the market!!

Solid state batteries are not ready to hit the market. Maybe a decade away. And the cost of production is now too high to change the market of lithium batteries cars. And the big challenge will be to find a very stable inteface for electrodes (if not you lose all the pros of this battery) and to have efficiency in cold climate. Sure it will be a nice solution...when it will be ready, but people can still buy lithium battery cars for many years.

There are many conflicting reports about how soon SS Batteries will hit the market - some as soon as 2 years, others 10, but take a middle ground of 5-6 years and the cost issues become more tangible.

If not now, then within a year or two, this issue is going to become a reality and I’m quite certain that in the immediate years before SS Batteries hit the market, the sale of Lithium Battery EV’s will be significantly impacted.

Battery technology is progressing fast.
At the moment, though, they are simply a poor choice for most people.

I’ve only just seen this UK article, but even without the imminent arrival of SS EV’s, the market for second hand EV’s is not looking good!!

It depends if you're buying or selling!

Well of course if you’re buying a 2nd hand EV you might be able to pick up a “bargain”, but if you’re thinking of buying new, you might think twice for fear of taking a big hit a few years down the road.

Good think I live here, though car should outlast me, and give the wife a couple decades of almost free transport. Doubt if she'd sell it anyway.

I’m an MG owner (PHEV), but I don’t share your optimism that they’ll last more than two decades, they don’t have the same quality as Toyota - also, be ready to replace the battery after the first decade or accept lower range.

Toyota quality, thankfully not, as they've had some issues of late.

Replace ofter 1 decade ... highly unlikely, if even half life expectancy is reached:
