I think it was always a case of when rather than if - he’s just done the decent thing by not hanging it out!!

Can you imagine Klopp coming back to English Wendyball?.... :D

Who would be a manager? Southgate's record isn't half bad, successive Euro Finals, a Semi-Final in the World Cup also a Quarter Final there. Loved one minute, loathed the next - it truly was funny seeing some of the English supporters interviewed in Germany. One day baying for his blood, the next calling him a saviour, and the next again baying for blood!!! That said, some disgraceful behaviour from a certain element - throwing plastic glasses/bottles at him after the match against Slovenia.... Dire result and poor play, but several players should be taken aside along with the entire Management team - why put the blame on a single individual?

Rugby in Wales is like being in a Gold Fish Bowl, and Players, Coaches and Managers (not to mention the WRU who deserve the shite), get absolute crap when results don't go our way - but it has to be said, English "Wendyball" supporters are far more fickle.... (no offence).

Maybe this is why Plymouth released Southgates apprentice Ian Foster so quickly - to replace the master.
Championship Plymouth Argyle 1 - 2 Leeds Utd

Points 46; Position 23 RELEGATED

I think the problem is that English fans have been denied success since 1966 so every time we get close they hope and expect to break the duck, only to be disappointed (once again)!! So although Southgate has done well and better than any manager since Sir Alf, the elusive trophy remained just out of reach.

Will his replacement fair any better - whilst hoping and praying, few will be surprised if he doesn’t.

We know that the media choose to interview people who support the view the media want to portray. There are both kinds of supporters in every camp so it's easy for the media to make it look as you say. Of course some supporters are fickle, that's true.

Your point about fan behaviour in general is well made though, many of the English do not travel well. I would never drink with the pack, a quiet bar with locals is always preferable. I think you have to watch the game with them though, for the atmosphere; you can always sneak away after the final whistle. :)

Southgate has a very good record, but it's hard to deny that his team selection and use (non-use) of subs has possibly left England falling short at the final hurdle. It's all conjecture but he's had plenty of time to experiment and prefers not to. Safety first I'm afraid. I hate to agree with Lineker on anything, but....

Not bad for a stand-in manager though, eh?

Klopp has ruled himself out as he won't break his one year sabbatical. I don't think he'd take it anyway, he'd take Germany though (my opinion). And the FA prefer an English manager.

In that case I’d prefer to see Eddie Howe, but not sure he’ll be willing to leave Newcastle, so that could mean Graham Potter who would be my second choice, but infinitely better than another name being banded around - Pochettino!!

Last time I looked the FA said they wouldn't restrict themselves to any nationality. That they simply want the best man for the job.

As for Potter, that is a complete and absolute non-starter. Rose up the ranks steadily, did a good job at Brighton, who have done even better since he left and was so far out of his depth at Chelsea, it was a relief to everyone, when he was removed.

We don't need any more theorists such as a Southgate clone. We need someone with a hands on record of success playing in a style that is needed to succeed, even if, because of not having the opportunity, they haven't reached the pinnacle of their profession.

Lee Carsley won the U 21 euros last year without conceding a single goal

I see the Spain manager also managed their U21s before full squad

At least make Carsley Assistant Manager

I think David Moyes would be a good candidate. Long and decent history. He's English, right?

Then again, he's 61 already. Probably wouldn't be as long term as they want.

He wouldn’t be a popular choice - he doesn’t have a good enough track record
