My old beast will be 8 years old for my driving license renewal later this month, and so I'll need a car test certificate.
I've read that some garages approved to do the test (yellow sign outside?) can also issue the car tax, is that correct? Getting both done on the same spot in Hua Hin would be much better than a trip to the Dept. of Land Transport at Pranburi or Cha-Am as well as to the garage.
Sorry can't be any help as to your question (I'm sure others will), but it begs the question how many years is the MOT initially and annually? You mention 8 years...? In the UK an MOT is required 3 years from new and each and every year there after..
Whilst I'm sure many couldn't give a rat's backside in Thailand, that 8 year comment does baffle me...

The MOT us required for a vehicle over 7 years old. The test is so basic as to be pretty worthless but rules are rules.
That clears it up

Everybody talks about the test being worthless, but I presume they must fail some vehicles. I always watch the guy, and he does seem to be checking various bits, so I presume he must find some things wrong. Has anybody heard of a car actually failing a MOT?

KC Garage under the flyover can do it. Test and Tax. Takes around 10 mins and collect the tax disc in around 3 days.

Its not really an 'MOT' as such, just a quick check of the basics on older vehicles to get a bit of paper to renew the rego.
While Google locating the garages mentioned I found a tyre place named อ้วนยางเปอร์เซ็นต์@หัวหิน, which Google translates as: "fatty rubber percentage".

That one's even closer to me than KC Garage if they also do the tax/registration, I'll check, thanks buks.
They do.
Thanks. Now the only question is how much they want, to spare me a drive to Pranburi. Tax is around 1600 Baht for my 8 year old 1.6 litre petrol car (should be even less this year), test 200 (or 300). I imagine they do the tax online so shouldn't be a great additional cost.

I've watched them as well and they do seem to take the brakes test on the rollers seriously at the place I go to out on the 3218 near La Vallee.
As for the charge for doing the tax, I can't remember exactly how much it is but it's not enough to make you drive to Pranburi.
It's more about emissions, brakes and general roadworthiness. The place I go to in Bangkok does have a workshop attached. Most places will do your compulsory insurance and the road tax renewal for a fee. But they do have to go to the land transport office to do so. If you've tried to renew this yourself, you'll appreciate the service they provide.
