Also (particularly to the Colonel) there is no need to quote me every time you want to reply, as it ends up sending me two unnecessary emails telling me you’ve replied, so not only do I end up reading your reply anyway, I also have to read and delete two emails!!

Pharvey needs to start a thread for the Rugby problem. A lot are dying in their 50's from brain related problems. Much tougher contact sport but at the end of the day I think eventually all players will have to wear the soft helmet we see now, or an advanced model with more protection. They don't need the NFL style, but they need something more than what they have now.

I'm withdrawing the above. We already have a ton of info and links to articles in the Rugby Thread about head injuries, and attempts to improve the situation. We don't need a new separate thread, just updates as they're issued.

As far as I'm concerned, this entire subject is stupid. There are many sports much more dangerous, but with a much lower profile. I doubt there's much headline making there. Throw in a few names like Jack Charlton and his brother Bobby, Peter Bonetti, Tommy Carroll, Alan Jarvis, Martin Peters, Mike Sutton, and Ray Wilson and some people sit up and take notice.

When the guys suffering now were playing, the footballs were really heavy and even more so when wet. I am sure there is a risk to all footballs, but as someone who started out with the old heavy balls, but saw them replaced with lighter materials almost season by season, the difference is actually hard to comprehend. and now they are lighter still.

It's actually a myth that modern footballs are lighter - at least in terms of their allowable starting weight (although it's true that the old leather balls did get heavier when wet, which modern balls don't).

The specified starting weight of a football in an official match has remained fixed at 14 to 16 ounces ever since 1937 (when it was actually increased from the previous standard, which was 13 to 15 ounces).

That's an interesting fact. I wonder if there is some magic created to give the appearance of being lighter? When you think how players now can get the ball, when taking free kicks, to micro-meander left, right, up, down, as it approaches the keeper. My personal perception is that they have got lighter, but I guess that is down to the material used? I recall heading the old balls and you could never get them very far, but within a few years, I recall shocking myself when catching a defensive header just right and the ball went from our penalty area to almost the halfway line. I was stunned and I think everyone else was as well. And I played midfield, not defence.

Despite trying to follow your instructions Pete, I’m still receiving emails quoting my posts - an old dinosaur like me is obviously not able to follow simple instructions - never mind, it’s not the end of the world!!
