Feral Dogs in Hua Hin

Post by derek60 »

There seem to be far fewer Soi dogs around this year. Is this the observation of others too? Has there been some (long overdue) action by the authorities to rid the town of these?

Yes I noticed that too.
Maybe more sterilization, maybe they got regrouped and are taken care of as there's a lot of volunteers investing themselves.

In our area I have also seen that owners have been keeping their dogs controlled and even caged which has made it considerably safer for cyclists and pedestrians. Perhaps this indicates that moves have been made and the locals fear their dangerous mutts will disappear along with the feral dogs.
When we use the term feral are we referring to the packs that cause so many issues in the suburbs or the homeless ones outside of the city which in general are fairly harmless and fearful of humans. I saw some on the area near Da Vinci school that have been there for years and never bothered anyone as far as I know.

When I go out on my bicycle I never see “feral” dogs, but often get chased by household dogs - mainly it’s a game for them, although I always have a cane ready for any that show signs of intent!!

Exactly, small packs are generally well-behaved if they are kept fed. We've had a small pack of between five and ten for 10 years, No pups (I'll go on the explain why). A couple of charitable people on motorbike/sidecars (I forget the Thai name for this snail) feeding the ones over around 2 kilometers of my local area, and my resort feeds the ones outside our gates daily.

We contacted Rescue P.A.W.S. who came and took them away, neutered them and returned them.

A larger pack can be an anti-social problem though. Although the only scares I get (jump scares is all) are when a house dog flies out from a garden to try to attack my car, I think I'm going to hit it, they get so close before backing off. Soi dogs don't do that!

Used to be a problem years ago in Bangkok, too. Especially when they were constructing those 'moobahns' - enclosed villages. The dogs were fed by workers and remained, posing a problem for new incoming residents. This problem was usually tackled by a phone call to the crocodile farm.. I kid you not.

Did you find a hotline for reporting animals that were in obvious distress?
Do they have animal control officers like the RSPCA?

Thank you Sateeb, but I already know how to Google.

Specifically, I was wondering, is there a hotline for reporting animals that are in obvious distress?

You can report mistreated animals to the police, with mixed results. Better just to contact Rescue Paws, even for soi dogs (I hate calling them feral dogs) or other animals in distress.

A lovely crowd at Rescue Paws - we got our latest dog from them. My son has run a small charity event each year since we got her, just to say thank you.
