Baked Beans

Never mind beans, I seem to have opened a can of worms with my little jest!
(I usually add salt and pepper, and sometimes a little vinegar.)

They might be popular up in the North of Thailand (the can of worms), but I’ll stick with the beans

I now buy Thai baked beans Ayam brand but you have to buy the tins marked English recipe. Ayam also has two other types of baked beans but they are not so good. You can buy the English Recipe beans at Lotus, BluPort, Nany's or many other places and they cost about 65 Baht per tin. American Baked Beans have lots of added brown sugar. Heinz makes both English and American baked beans and uses cans with the same labels so you have to be sure that the Heinz beans you buy actually come from England.

I went to Makro today and checked out their AYAM baked beans for any with English Recipe and although they were in 3 piles no English recipe - not that you mentioned Makro, but as a matter of interest where do they mark it on the tin.

When I first came to HH I did eat Ayam but whilst at a good price they had way too much sugar. Thanks

I've just taken a tin of Ayam Beans from the kitchen cupboard. Ingredients are listed as:

• No MSG

• No preservatives added

• Sodium content 340mg/107n

• 50% Great Northern White Beans

• Tomato Sauce

• Sugar

• Tomato Concentrate

• Thickener (INS 1422)

• Non-iodized Table Salt

• Rice Vinegar

• Cinnamon For Those who need to restrict their iodine intake

I've no idea if the above is good or bad, or even accurate. It's what's written on the can.

Other than sugar, seems reasonably healthy!!

They have a light version, blue band at the base of the can and the word "Light" in blue on the face. Sugar and sodium are both reduced, almost half and over half, respectively.

I've tried the various baked beans that are in the market. Probably because I'm used to it Bushs baked beans are my choice, many of the others are too tomatoy (?). My alltime favorite isn't available here, B&M. They are out of Portland, ME where I used to live. Their beans are smaller than the norm with great sauce.

Never tried beans on toast, will have to give it a go!

Just looked at the ingredients of Branston's BB.
Easy to see why they have flavour:

Beans (51%), Tomatoes (38%), Water, Sugar, Modified Maize Starch, Reduced Sodium Sea Salt, Spirit Vinegar, Salt, Paprika, White Pepper, Spices, Flavourings.
