Re: Tax residency in Thailand and taxing overseas income
I’m surprised at that comment Steve, I thought everything tax-wise in the UK would be fairly consistent, as there are widely publicised rules and regulations posted online?

^If you look at all those UK Revenue websites, you'll see the words guides and guidance a lot and not rules.
If they decide they want proof of something, you'll get nowhere trying to tell them they don't need it, similar to BBs experience with the Thai Revenue.

But it's not really relevant what the UK does, when referrring to here. At the moment, as far as anyone can tell. it's only HH seeking verification.STEVE G wrote: ↑Fri Feb 21, 2025 6:20 pm ^If you look at all those UK Revenue websites, you'll see the words guides and guidance a lot and not rules.

I think as BB alluded to, the breaker will be, folk going into the tax office and time after time, saying they can't provide verification, so then what happens? It's a classic catch-22.
I thought of asking my pension provider for verification that the P60 is genuine and to verify it, but taking it to pedantic levels, what is an original? Mine is only accessible via a link in an email that they send me, or by a print-off from my actual employers website (the pension scheme is managed by a wholly-owned sperate company of about 16 London Boroughs). And they do not post them. Would they even do it? I have been retired for over 11 years and it was years before that, that my employer stopped delivering printed payslips to your desk - it became on-line only.
In Addition, I have just had sent to me by the revenue my annual tax summary by email with an attachment to print off. They simply don't post these things out to Thailand, well, they might do, I guess, but can I risk it?

I’m not going anywhere near the tax office, but I do actually get my P60 sent to me here by my UK Pension provider every year - I actually asked them “can you send them electronically” and they said no!!

I'm pretty certain I will stay well away, as well, until we get something official from the Thai authorities.Dannie Boy wrote: ↑Fri Feb 21, 2025 9:00 pm I’m not going anywhere near the tax office, but I do actually get my P60 sent to me here by my UK Pension provider every year - I actually asked them “can you send them electronically” and they said no!!
And the fact that there is no consistency from UK pension providers just goes to show how silly it is for the Thais to expect uniformity from a system that is possibly beyond their comprehension, as with thre exception of public servants, most here don't have private or even work pension schemes, bar the mandatory social security one.

I'm really looking forward to sitting in the sun whilst some official decides my what fate might be from reading English paperwork that they don't understand. And then tell me to get verification from a trusted source that simply won't give it.
I can't wait for the experience.

BB I do not understand why you have not shown HH tax people your annual HMRC Tax calculation this is an original document giving all calculations and ones tax details?? together with their covering letter addressed to you here. -There would be no need for rubbish like validations etc etc?Big Boy wrote: ↑Fri Feb 21, 2025 4:19 pmYes, I think until more people actually present them with the same problem, I'm going to be a winging old Brit with a one-off problem. It was when I promised them hundreds of others in a similar situation that they started listening, and the problem was pushed up the chain. They actually lessened the requirement, and would have accepted something a bit more official (signature and official stamp), but Civil Service Pensions are proving to be as useful as a chocolate fireguard. Faced with a >฿118K tax bill, I did not want to take any chances whilst waiting for Civil Service Pensions, and took the additional 'expensive' route that I did. For today's meeting, apart from the original Civil Service Pensions document that was not acceptable, the only proof I had was the Gov.UK approved solicitor/Thai Embassy, London document. I still don't know if my document is acceptable i.e. because of an administrative error, my appointment was deferred until Monday.caller wrote: ↑Fri Feb 21, 2025 2:48 pmSo all other tax offices that aren't asking for verification of documents produced, are all wrong? That's really key to UK expats (at least) and our relationship with the tax office. If that requirment isn't actually a requirement and it's evident it isn't in use elsewhere, then everything would be easy.![]()

Because I've never received one, and don't know where to get it. Can you please advise where it comes from? All that I receive is a P60, which they will not accept without certification.

Have you registered with HMRC and got an online account with them - that shows how they calculate your tax.
Re: Tax residency in Thailand and taxing overseas income
And the really depressing/worrisome thing is that if this does not go away – personally I think it will go away – it will be an become an annual event. And as we all know, that means each year the requirements can easily be changed – new person in a tax office…….lomuamart wrote: ↑Sat Feb 22, 2025 2:43 am I'm really looking forward to sitting in the sun whilst some official decides my what fate might be from reading English paperwork that they don't understand. Re: Tax residency in Thailand and taxing overseas income
Ah right, self assessment................ somebody talked about that before, but when I enquired I was told by the system my circumstances did not require it. I was basically told to go away.

I've just logged on to Gov.UK (what a pain that is these days). In the tax section, it gives no more detail than my P60.
