Just spent a very enjoyable few days in HK visiting Mum & getting my visa. While I was there, a friend, who works in the Mandarin Oriental invited us for lunch. We went to the Cafe Causette (another change since my Old China Hand Days!!) in the Mandarin.

Funnily, they had a Thai promotion on with chefs & waitresses flown in from the Oriental in Bangkok. So, I decided to have the gaeng kiew wan moo & khao suay at the astronomical price of $175HK. That's 753 bt for a green curry & rice. It was nice & I caused some laughs by ordering in Thai, but, wow, what a price!

Has anyone eaten a basic (not delicacy) Thai dish for a higher price? Just to top it, my drink (a soda manao with less sugar than usual & sliced chillies added - delish!!!) was $75HK - a mere 322 bt for a non-alcoholic drink! :cheers:

Can anyone top those? BTW, I think I'm going to try making the drink at home - it really was fantastic!

Oh, and our friend picked up the tab! :thumb:

Glad to see you took an enjoyable break, Dawn. Did the pups miss you. :D . I'm not surprised at all at the prices you quote. I get hit with this stuff each time I'm there.

You haven't told us where your Mom resides but unless she has a special deal, or far out on the Kowloon side, it's probably expensive.

For years I've stayed at the Luk Kwok Hotel on HK island, Wan Chai, Glouchester Road, as all my business is on that side. In year's past you could get a good room for under or around $100 USD per night. Now you're lucky to get one for under $300.

It's money city to be sure, to be made and to be spent.

Interesting short story. I have an old HK friend who immigrated from mainland China with his family in 1956 (Mao's Great Leap Forward era). The boat docked, he got off, took 10 steps and was in the lobby of the Luk Kwok Hotel. That's how far the harbour has been reclaimed in 51 years. Glouchester Road WAS the harbour front. :shock: It's now what?......1 1/2-2 KM from Glouchester Road to the water. Pete :cheers:

well Dawn sounds a little steep. But i have a Thia girlfriend.
I get a curry about once a week.
But my wallet gets emptied daily. :o

32 pounds for a tom yum at the River kwai in reigate high street 8 years ago .It was supposed to serve 4 people and contained 4 prawns,4 crab claws,4 bits of cod and one stem of lemongrass .Every time i visit England somebody insists on taking me to a Thai restaurant when all I want is a few pints and a kebab .

130 hkd for khow mun gai at the peak btw
