I intend to live forever - so far so good.
From the details you've supplied, I'm afraid that you're likely to only be eligible for a multi-entry Non Imm O from your home country and this is certainly what you should apply for in the first instance.
As you say, you're not 50 yet, when retirement kicks in and you're not married to a Thai. These are the normal reasons for an annual extension. There's work of course, but it's not easy to come by and it dosn't sound like that's your plan anyway.
The multi-entry visa will give you up to 15 months here, exiting every 90 days and once just before the visa itself expires, which is a year after being issued.
After that, I think you'll be at the whim of Imm and Embassies/consulates in the region. They're not renowned for their user friendliness. Some, Singapore, Penang and KL are reportedly issuing the multi-entries again, but you need a reason - marriage or retirement. I doubt any amount of money in a Thai bank will help here.
The other option is just to return home and get another multi-entry. Expensive, certainly, but they're pretty easy to get at "friendly" consulates in your home country. Reason for visit would be to check out retirement.
