Soul-destroying for sure. I have a huge library of books and in the next few weeks will move in to a significantly bigger house and finally get this library sorted. But in October 2005 the house flooded while we were in Bangkok with much of that library stored in boxes on the floors.

Came back to find a significant number of books already going mouldy - including one that was eighty years old and worth over US$500! Other stuff that was damaged included photographs and all the cards etc from when my daughter was born! Was going to give this all back to her when she reached 21 (next year!). Also lost some of the water-colours she did when she was about 3-5 years old! Thank god we had three weeks of sunshine after that. I was able to get most stuff dried out.

I was in Australia when the April/May flood happened. But a sixth sense made me stick everything up on tables before we went! That was when my partner decided to brick us in! Ugly but it has already kept two more floods away. The problem for people living in the mooban is that it makes selling their houses difficult as any prospective buyer will see all the little efforts that have been made to protect homes. Many are already standing empty with 'for sale' signs.

Something I have praised the Thais for (see 'dtaii mai' I can be positive) is that when mai pen rai turns to pen rai then often quite effective crisis management kicks in. I hope this happens soon for all the folk on Soi 102.
