I think all Thais are legally bound to vote in a General Election, with fines for those who don't.

The night before the last General Election there was a distinct lack of Thais in the town, most had gone home to vote the next day.

How on earth are the hotels, restaurants and other tourist reliant companies going to cope during the busiest two weeks of the year, with maybe 50% of their staff going off back home to vote for 2 or 3 days.

Mind numbingly senseless date for an election but - TIT.

I think there's a new thing JD where a Thai can vote anywhere if they go and register at that particular district office ??? in advance. I seem to remember 2 weeks. This happened before the last Thaksin election. Don't know if the junta has now canned the plan or not? Pete

As you say, they have to register and vote at the Tessaban 14 days before election date.

Although technically, voting is compulsory in Thailand, there are no sanctions and it has NEVER been enforced. One of those laws which should die a death.
