Chain Em Up!

Post by sandman67 »

It seems that it isn't just the sunseekers that come down to HH at the weekend.

My lass Amy has now had 3 bikes stolen in the last 3 months.

All were parked and steering locked in the Bintabaht Block area whilst they were hired out to customers.....I did tell her to get some U locks for the wheels but it seems Thai's dont lock motorbikes with those.....god knows what they use em for.

Anyway, Amy also has half of P&P now, and after talking to her and Mamma Porn I have gone out and bought 14 foot of case hardened chain and a big fat lock.

I can attest to the hardness of the chain as the lad in the metal shop couldn't cut it with his bolt croppers and had to use a very big floor mounted disk cutter to cut it to length. The lock looks sturdy and I doubt any of the thieving swine carry tools anyway.

Heres the deal.

If you want to lock your bike up securely for the night while you wobble home worse for wear, come in to the P&P bar before closing (abt 1am is good), buy a beer and ask one of the lasses (or me) to lock up your bike for the night. They will shakle the bike up nice and secure to the bar.

In the morning come back and bang on the door and one of them will then unlock the chain for you.

Its not guaranteed but lets try to make it harder for the thieving little bastards....cos as usual the MIBs don't give a shit.

Buying a beer is a fair exchange for such a service .Myself and a number of friends regularly park large expensive motorbikes near there and wander around the town for a few beers .Will bear this in mind for the next time we have one too many .

Oh Christ! I seen the topic to this thread and wiping of a hangover I almost ran out side to put the chains on the tires of the truck. Thank god the sun was out and it struck me before I got to it parked in the driveway. ..........OOOhhh yes no more winters!
Why is it called 'after dark' when it really is 'after light'?

I'm convinced this is an organized thing and the cops are in on it. They don't care a hoot about anything that involves falangs in this town and are of the attitude that falangs can afford to buy new bikes anyway so whats the big deal.

Its a good idea to offer such a service though, too bad I dont have a bike!

Hmm,

Sounds pretty bad man!

I assume these bikes were small capacity cc like honda dreams / suzuki smashes or the like?

The reason being these bikes are readily in demand and sold/stripped on the black-market due to availability and demand.
The chain you're using i expect is high tensile steel (stronger alloy).
The more expensive exotics and CBRs etc are harder for thieves to sell on and process. Not saying anyone should be lax about bike security if they own them but just a thought for reassurance.
I will add IMO that the BIB are very corrupt and dangerous compared with northern thailand and would not put it past them to have vested interests. However this is just me speculating...

Aren't some on this forum friendly with the Polizi, MIB, BIB? JW, being in the property business don't you have some contact with the police and could give us your opinion as to possible police complicity?

To bad the Greek isn't a poster, I'm sure he would know.

The bikes that went have all been 125 mopeds.....easy to nick, easy to strip, easy to flog off again.

I really doubt that any of the local MIBs are in on it.....a load of them drink in P&P semi-regularly and all of them have a real soft spot for Amy. They reckon its a local chop shop that is doing all the thefts, stripping them for spares, or respraying and selling em on.

The MIBs just dont give a toss as it means actually doing some work.....and like the last ones said to Amy "the insurance always pays out".

If the service gets used enough I'll also rig up a minicam on the wall to act as a further deterrent.....

On a different note, and to add a spot of perspective to the "dangerous roads" debates on here, my mate got wiped out on his way home from work last week by a bus driver that was pissed. Seems everywhere is dangerous for bikers.....

yeah mate....

Martin Hall...a mate that I grew up with died last week at the hands of a bus driver who, now it turns out, had been out for a lunchtime drink with his mates....he was over the limit when the cops arrested him.

That piece of shit will get away with what is tantourmount to murder in my book....a fine and maybe some community service......

Thats the UK for yeh....saying that some dumb piece of shit just nearly wiped me out......no headlights and 4...yeas 4 on a moped coming down the wrong side of the road on a dark soi......no lids as well...

maybe I will apply the farang way of riding........

threaten my life and I will fight back.....if I'd applied "London" rules that lass and her 3 mates would now have been eating tarmac....

I love this country but simetimes these people make me see blood.

Martin enver hurt a soul. He's dead. That stupid bitch and her 3 mates are still breathing....how fucked up is that?

Seems to be an irony somewhere here in these threads...

...One person is saying the MIBs are in on the bikes goin' walkabout,
then we have a promotion to park your bikes overnite at the P&P bar..

...this is the bar where many MIBs drink most nights.

Good security/bad security??

I had my bike locked with a wheel lock + the wheel turned and locked. Makes no difference they just pick it up and throw it in the back of a pick up and no one will say a word.

worse in the PI. a farang owed bike rental had 3 bikes stolen,

the police said they found them and could get them back for 15,000 pasos each

If you really didn't want to know the answer, why the hell did you ask me the question!!!

Usual....

Im not trying to promote the P&P at all. Its a busy place and I doubt one or two beers a night would make that much difference.

Porn was kind enough to let me set up the chain and attach it to her bar. If I or Amy's customers leave their bikes out in the open then thats where they get chained up. That way if some daft sod does try cutting the chain the lasses that sleep in the bar will hear it (hopefully) and call out the MIBs.

Hopefully what they will do is think "sod it" and go find an unshackled bike somewhere else.

I just figured that it would be a nice sort of community spirit thing if I said to anyone else with a bike that theres plenty of chain, and if they wanted to they could use it too.

Buying a beer for the bar (or me ;-) ) seems like being polite....thats all. Its not a condition....I'll lock bikes up for free....no biggie.

The other reason I set it up is because as a biker I hate bike thieves, be they Thai or Brits back home.

The wanting money to recover the bikes doesn't surprise me one bit......one MIB tried getting a bribe off Amy just to fill out a crime report following one of the thefts. Its a shame thats how things work but then thats just the way things are.

Thats a very nice offer of you, may have to take you up on it later this month. I always hire a bike in Thailand and so far havent had any problems but im well aware that bikes are stolen left right and centre, alledgedly sometimes by the people you hired them from! So i'll be taking care where i park.
