Why have music SO LOUD?

Post by usual suspect »

About June/July time the bar owners in and around 'the strip' were
duly invited to a meeting at the ampher/council office with the theme
of the meeting been 'noise pollution from bar-music spilling out into
the street/road'.
Some bars took note of this, some bars have their speakers facing
inwards, many dont give a t*ss.

The prime example of this is the 'new' bar at the end of Bintabaat
(closest to the temple) big speakers filling the whole area with loud noise
Seems nearly everone is pi**ed-off with the owner over this, and
despite constant visits from the MIB, the FARANG owner keeps it up.

My thoughts are the local council will do/say nothing till its time for the
bars to renew their licenses, then come down heavy on them all.

Its hard enuf to keep the bars open and running, but with a little help
from the ignorant amongst us we may be seeing even more tailor-shops
near the temple. :guns:

a factual correction here....

Mon is the licensee in Lucky Lukes and owns the lease on the bar. I know because I know Mon. I've known her for 5 years now.....she used to work in P&P when I first went there. Lovely lass.....

Frank is her boyfriend.

If y think the bar is out of order have you tried telling Mon and Frank?

The MIBs have visited twice as far as Mon is concerned about her business....once because on opening night she forgot to display her licences behind the bar, and the second time when the music police from BKK raided every Bintabaht bar and Frank chinned one of them for trying to take his computer....that wasnt plugged into the music system.

Funnily enough it also seems to be the consistently busiest bar down the Bintabaht....or at least whenever I drag my old bones down there. So maybe they are catering to the clientèle?

Personally I dont drink there that often because I dont like the music they play....not the volume.

The meeting in question was triggered by a bar that had a live band playing that was too loud.....(and it wasnt Lucky Lukes...he just plays rave stuff).

Thats what one of the senior cops told my missus.

And My missus was at that meeting as a bar owner. The bigwig also went on about bar girls smoking cannabis.....

shows how screwed up the local law enforcement priorities are.

Ignore street crime , bike thefts and burglaries......concentrate on what is easy to enforce.,,,or whatever some messed up dah dah land idea of priorities are. Even my missus was scratching her head at the cannabis stuff.....

espite constant visits from the MIB, the FARANG owner keeps it up.
They come, they get paid, they leave, and it continues.

Same as Pattaya. On payday guess who is at the top of the list? the BIB.

If you really didn't want to know the answer, why the hell did you ask me the question!!!

You should be grateful its in the bar district and not in a residential area where it seems they can blast out as much noise as they like for as long as they like because nobody gives a @#$%

Excessive noise seems to be a way of life in Thailand.

the music is loud like this because when it becomes too loud for you its time to stop visiting bars(what would your doctor say if he gets knowledge about this)! music belongs to a bar like the amen to the pray and also protects the guests from perhaps curious listening people in the surrounding neighbourhood, its just normally!

Music belongs to a bar? I might have lived in a small town back in England but many bars had no music, unless you forked out 50p fir the juke baox, with just a few bars having piped background music.
The bars here blast out techno pop music because 90% of them are managed by Thai ladies who play the music that they like, regardless of the fact that the average customer is about 50 years old and would prefer it to be a bit quieter so that they can chat to the bar ladies.

where i live most bars plays music LOUD! only one bar that plays music on sane volumes so you can sustain an conversation. needless to say that bar is always jammed full with people. so full that, if you come after 20:00 you probably would not get in. :(

it should be the golden middle way! No music perhaps boring especially when you are entering alone but it should not be so loud that it avoids any conversation and if its just the beer i am ordering!

Buksida, I made exactly this point on the thread by the poster with a loud bar next door.

In my opinion, there is a perfect level of volume ( inside a bar) that allows for a lively feeling while also allowing conversation. But maybe this is a Western concept. . the whole idea of having conversation in a bar while listening to music. ( But then, I don't get karoake either)

I went to the Oktoberfest at the Marriott ( two nights in fact) and had a terrific time. They had two musical groups: a German music duo and the typical Filipino bar trio.

During the German sets, the volume of the music was just right. You could sing along and hear yourself, you could talk to other people, you could dance a polka! When the Filipinos came on, you probably could have heard them clearly as far away as Market Village. They were SO loud they often got feedback screeching. End of conversation. Back to drinking and grinning at your friends.

Its not just Thailand. If you go in to any 'Fun' Pub in the UK, the music is generally too loud to have a proper conversation.

This is probably a "travellers' tale", but one reason the Thais tend to make noise and shout is because in the country they YELL over the fields to talk to each other.
Noise, what's that?
Only a possible explanation.

That makes a lot of sense to me.

I've notice over the years that my wife can hold a conversation with other Thai ladies at distances that we would not normally conceive possible. This was particularly noticeable when out daughter lived with us in the UK. However, I always put it down to very good hearing, rather than being able to portray their voice over huge distances. My wife is quite loud anyway, but she rarely has to speak louder when talking over a distance.

Strangly enough, apart from when she's shouting at me, the only time she speaks any louder is when she is on the telephone.

Gotta concur on the Thai karaoke bars....I live out on the klong road and theres a couple of bars a block or two away...going in them is a bit of an aural hell experience. The music is always blisteringly loud, and the singers are terrible. When they murder Carabao it makes me cry....

The thing is these bars are right next to houses. That to me is a way deal more bad than bars in the bar blok playing techno.....and I do agree it does look really weird seeing 50 year olds jigging about to techno.....still I guess I look weird rocking out to Rammstien.
