Deputy PM declines to rule out another coup if PPP wins poll

Post by STEVE G »

BANGKOK, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister in charge of national security affairs Sonthi Boonyaratkalin Friday declined to rule out a possible coup d'etat if the People Power Party (PPP) wins the December 23 election and forms a government, according to local newspaper Bangkok Post's website.

"It will depend on the situation," Sonthi, who led the Sept. 19coup last year to depose the former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, said when he was asked whether a coup will be staged if the PPP, comprised mostly of former members of the now-defunct Thai Rak Thai Party which was founded by Thaksin, gets to form a new government.

He also countered the PPP leader Samak Sundaravej's statement that the party's victory will mean ousted Thaksin was right all along, saying that the court is the only one to decide whether Thaksin committed any wrongdoing.

Meanwhile, acting chairman of Council for National Security (CNS) Chalit Phukphasuk said the CNS is not worried if Samak bringsback Thaksin's regime if the PPP wins the election.

Under the democratic system, people will decide what is good for the country, he said.

Chalit, also chief of air force, insisted the CNS and the military will maintain politically neutral and will not involved in politics in any way.
