Has anyone tried any of these establishments? Cheap Charlie's sounds fun?

Yeah, those thoughts ran through my mind as well when I read the article. And, of course there are the obligatory mentions of Khao San Road.

Don't touch a certain bar next to torros

Seems they will only play music for thr girls

Politely asked for a change in the music and was politely told to piss off

I've been to Cheap Charlies. Yes, it's cheap in Bangkok standards but that's about it IMHO. It's ok to have a beer or two before hitting other pubs. I've also been to the Oriental which is from the other side of the price range.

Been to Cheap Charlie's once many years ago. Remember us leaving because they did not sell Thai whisky by the bottle. Besides that there were eight customers already so no places left to sit for us! It is small indeed. Has his charm.
We are all living in 'the good old days' of the future.

I visited friends at The Oriental - once. Managed to get to their room and ask for a small Beer Sing from their mini bar.
I was gobsmacked when one of them said it cost 300 Baht. That was about seven years ago.
I did read The Lonely Planet before though and wore long trousers. Maybe they thought we were all rich

Sirocco is cool for watching the sunset - but the cost of the cocktails is likely to take your breath away more than the view!!!!

Be careful not to step back from Cheap Charlies too quickly or you'll find yourself standing in the road!!!
