Thaksin - Sunday Times article
This was in today's (9th Dec) ST magazine, so a bit confusd about the date on the article?
Seems like the papers are starting to take an interest and I wonder how long it will be before pressure is placed on the UK Govt. about just accepting this guy?
I wondered where he was living and it doesn't get much more exclusive!
He seems pretty confident - does make you wonder?

Whatever we think about Thaksin and however many Press Reports are written, one simple fact remains.
If Thaksin returned to Thailand and was allowed to stand in a free and fair election he would WIN.
He still commands an incredable amount of support in the North and NorthEast and that scares the shit out of the present Government.

The biggest problem with the next election is that the rich Bangkok Business man has not yet accepted he only has the same voting power as a poor Rice Farmer from the North East.
Whatever the result of the vote ultimate power will still rest with the Military and the only person who can protect the rights of the people is the King.

Re: Thaksin
The words in bold are the key here - Thaksin (and many other politicians worldwide) did not win or participate in a free and fair election, and if he returned it would not be either. I don't know why anyone bothers using those words any more - elections here are run on the same basis as the country is run, so money talks and fairness walks.seasidesurfer wrote:If Thaksin returned to Thailand and was allowed to stand in a free and fair election he would WIN.

Times story certainly sums up what many think about Toxin.
For any Thai speakers here: I always understood the word "Thai" to mean "freedom", thus Thailand to mean "Land of the Free" and Thai Rak Thai to mean the "Thais Love Freedom" party.
Anybody?

I didn't see the Sunday Times Article but I do know from a reliable source that the Serious Fraud Office in UK has been requested to assist the Thai government in its enquiries.
Uk Gov. declined pending the outcome of the 23 December elections and would then co-operate with a democratically elected Government, which of course if that happens to be PPP may well suffer a certain 'lack of interest' in pursuing matters

Re: Thaksin
Interesting, and reasonable. But as for the SFO? Not sure they have the wherewithal, apart from checking the audit trails/accounts and asking questions that others may need to deal with?Sabai Jai wrote:I didn't see the Sunday Times Article but I do know from a reliable source that the Serious Fraud Office in UK has been requested to assist the Thai government in its enquiries.

But I would have expected the UK to have already made its own enquiries, at the very least to assess the risk, or otherwise, of being associated with blood money.
As ever, time will tell.
