Disgusting Dog Abuse!!!

Post by KelpieKiss »

Saw something horrible yesterday. A Thai guy drove straight at 2 dogs on the
road near Elephant temple. One just got out the way and he went straight
over the second. He didn't slow down at all! There was a horrible crunching sound and the dog was hobbling off to the side to probably live for a long time in horrific agony. Complete and utter bastard!

Has anyone else witnessed this kind of thing? Made me sick.

Unfortunately dog abuse is a common occurance in Thailand.

You will rarely see a dog being treated with as much love and care as you would in most of the western world. It really makes me sick seeing things like this. Dogs are generally owned for the one purpose.......to bark at anybody or anything coming within a 1 meter radius of the owners house, NOT, to cost too much money on food, to be a 'member' of the family or even, god forbid, to take up valuable time being bathed!!!

GLC - thats a hell of a generalisation!

My wife would really beg to differ with you, but then she doesn't hail from HH and I know she misses her dog and cat's whilst here in the UK. Her dog is a soppy long eared thing with a waggy tail and a big sloppy tongue that is very much part of the family.

In fact, she misses her pets so much, that for the first time in my life, I am a moggy owner!

Now, where is the little b*****d!

I'm not trying to defend the driver if it was obvious he aimed at the dogs with intent, but dogs are very unpredictable around cars. I have unfortunately run over and killed a dog on the canal road, and had near misses with many more, not through carelessness or callousness, but sheer accident, and stupidity on the dogs behalf. I slow down when I see loose dogs running or walking near the road, and did on the fatal occasion, almost coming to a standstill as there were a number of dogs there; once I thought I was past them I speeded up again but one I had missed shot out straight under my wheels. I think Thais drive expecting the dogs to get out of the way, so pretty much how many of them drive full stop! I guess you can say it is Darwinism at work?

The guy actually went for the dogs. It was no accident. The dog was in the road but he actually made sure his truck went over it. That's the kind of thing potential serial killers do. Don't get me wrong either. Not saying this is a Thai thing at all. The guy just happened to be Thai.

I was heading to Penang from Samui in the early nineties in a mini bus. There was a large dog eating some road kill, the driver beeped his horn once, then drove straight at the dog. There was no one else on the road and as far as I remember it was 4 lanes, no problem to go around the animal. He for sure, purposely hit the dog, it slammed up underneath the bus as well, never forget the noise! The two Thai's in the front thought it was highly amusing, looked at each other and laughed. None of the passengers spoke for the rest of the journey, it was horrible!

I am sure you are right Wanderlust. I've been in a couple of pick ups that have hit dogs at speed - not me driving though. It has been explained to me that the rule is that you never swerve to avoid the dog, you simply sound your horn and keep driving. If the dog doesn't get out of the way then it gets hit - end of.

Many years ago, we had a Dalmation, whilst I was walking her (yes, she was off the lead, but it was a quiet Soi in a Moo Baan), a local driving a pick up accelarated and drove into our Dog, of course she died within minutes after running away yelping.

I have no doubt that it was done with full intention.

I've seem motorcyclists stick their leg out to kick dogs as they ride past.

If it's intentional, then all I'd say is that a smallish dog can cause quite a bit of damage to a car, even if hit at low speed.
I had the misfortune of running one over in London, years ago, on my way to work. It ran out between two parked cars in a residential area and I simply didn't have a chance. Was doing no more than 30mph.
Result - one dead dog and a pretty messed up front end of a 1,300 Ford Escort. The dog was about the size of a half grown labrador.

I agree Lomu - the last time we hit a dog (about the size and build of a Staffordshire Bull Terrier) it was head on and the front bumper had a head sized dent in it! I was amazed at the damage done. Whatever your feelings about dogs, if you cared at all about your car, you wouldn't wilfully drive at a dog for that reason alone.

 What a weird thread! Anyone else got a gory story about running over a dog?

Dog Abuse

Post by Sabai Jai »

I consider myself lucky in never having harmed a dog although there were some who used to chase me on my way home on the bike some nights that my feelings towards were somewhat less than exemplary.

A couple of years ago everbody was being relatively 'nice' to them. Remember when 'Tong Daeng' T-Shirts were in fashion. Not sure if it actually happened but there seemed to be a perception that they had been asked to be nice to strays?

Things don't last long though do they?

Deer

Post by DaveT »

Last year driving through the wilds of Norfolk around 11 pm on a B road I came round a bend, it was quite foggy and still, when a very large deer, huge antlers, can flying out of the field about 45 degrees from my right hand side.

Something had obviously spooked it and it headed full pelt towards the corner of my lovely black BMW 7 series. I was only doing about 25 mph as it was a windy, narrow road. I had nowhere to go and that awful split second when you know you're going to hit something was very suddenly there.

But the road was a bit slippery and about 5 yards from my car the poor thing slipped on the road and rather than hitting me head on went under.

He was really coming at me fast, no time to do anything but as he slipped he went under the car and I just went over him.

He was really badly injured. I stopped and called the police who sent a vet out. There was going to be no recovery unfortunately and he had to be put down there and then.

It was hugely sad and I felt really bad, but I know there was absolutely nothing I could do. Even if I'd been stationary he'd have ran into me. The lucky part for me was that due to his last second slip there was no visible damage to the car at all. If he'd have stayed upright, I'm sure even the sturdy BMW would have been a write-off.

So sad.

Presumably you took the roadkill home for dinner as it would have fitted into the boot of a 7 series easily.
