sky lantern - where to buy?

Post by subdoedel »

At new years eve we saw many beautiful sky lanterns in the night, I did not find any shop where these things can be bought. Anybody knows??

I never seen them for sale in the shops either. I did buy one once though from a vendor walking along the beach. I think you need to be in the area at the time in order to get one. Also, many of the Thais/Chinese make their own so maybe ask them to show you.
Don't try to impress me with your manner of dress cos a monkey himself is a monkey no less - cold fact

Generally they are availiable around 'sonkran' as they are part of the festival. Try getting one of those baby's to fly though..... :|

I believe there has been a clampdown on them at recent Songkran and Loy Krathong festivals, I presume for safety or environmental reasons, certainly in Hua Hin anyway. That may explain why they are not for sale in shops.

Have successfuly made these in the past.

1) Get a dry cleaning bag and sellotape the hole in the top closed using as little tape as possible to keep it lightweight.
2) Rig a 'cross' of 30 amp fusewire across the bottom open end again using tape.
3) Fix a burner pad (Similar to those seen under the hot trays at buffets) in the centre of the 'cross'

place assembly onto a pile of bricks - i.e. to get it about 30cm off the ground.

Now the tricky part.

One person hold the bag up and allow it to inflate whilst another holds a lighted cigarette lighter under - to give it the initial hot air.

As it inflates, light the burner - voila - lift off :thumb:

Be careful you dont light the bag!!!!!!!!!

Strictly for adults only and preferably when sober
