To Crazy88’s request for Indian spices: try Makro in Pranburi. They have about 25 meters of shelve space for spices.

I shop a lot at the meat shop on Soi 41, good quality, and always spotless clean. Can find things in there that I can't find anywhere else in Thailand. Villa at 265 for Branston against 200 on Soi 41, other savings to be had on a lot of imported bits.

The owner is a nice guy, he will help you out with a lot of things, even if it means sending you to another shop to buy what you need, told me where to get Oxo cubes in town, and who sells the crustiest bread. :thumb:

Gordon Bennett,
You are allowed to name the place you know, particularly as it is one of the site sponsors - Hua Hin Ham & Bacon - and everything you say is spot on.

Coming from Pranburi, it's just on the bypass (not main HH road). Literally just past the Thanarat junction.

Back to the original subject of this post; Villa Market has almost finished construction on Phetkasem Rd. just down from San Paulo Hospital. According to rumor they are scheduled to open late March or early April.... I can't wait!

When I was driving to the airport a couple of weeks ago I caught the sign VILLA GROCERY and was jumping for joy. Can hardly wait to get home to stock up. If you could see me now I'm taking three foot leaps beside my computer. Yippy! BQ is next on the list.

I really think that Villa may give Tescos a bit of a jolt when it comes to the farang and ex.pat market.

I've only been to Tescos twice (that was enough) and quite frankly the selection of anything, including the vegetables (which were overpriced, and out-of-date) has convinced me that I'm better off at the little supermarket in the shopping mall. And I couldn't stand the noise, or the amount of wandering Thais with grandma and grandpa and kids, all having a lovely day out in an air-conditioned shop.

We used to live in Bangkok (10 yrs ago), and Villa was god. It'll be interesting to see what they come up with in Hua Hin. We buy most of our vegetables and meat at the local 'talat nats' and I'm quite happy with the quality of produce and fun element :) of shopping there. What I'm looking for is a reasonably priced place to buy ordinary cheese, potatoes, and the odd farang oddity.

VS

PS: Has anyone else noticed the price of cheese and butter literally going through the roof. We used to buy a large block (2kg) of boring cheddar for about 600 baht - it's now 1,400 baht. Orchid butter has gone up from around 46 baht to 55 baht (in a week!). What's going on...?

VS, there’s been a worldwide boom in the prices of dairy products over the last year, largely caused by increasing demand in emerging economies in Russia, China and India. As people get richer they start consuming these things, which are effectively a luxury item in these regions. For instance, apparently a large percentage of French dairy production now goes into Danone Yoghurts for export to the Far East.

It's still under constuction a block or so north of the San Paulo Hospital. It won't be open for a while.

I don't mind paying a little extra for something I really have a taste for.

I love grilled cheese sandwiches. I went to the Villa in Pattaya last week.

Kraft American cheese slices. $10.35 for 16 slices. had to pass on that one.

they didn't have the Mac and Cheese I like this time either. Maybe thats a good thing.

On another note, just got back from the PI and prices for everything are through the roof. A lot more expencive than here.

Oranges were almost a dollar a piece.

$5.35 for a lb. of ground round. and we're talking HIGH fat content.

Most of the shopping I do here is at the night market Wed and Sun on soi 56. Priced are about half that of Tesco.

I've even started buying meat there.

Then again being a former Marine if it. it crawles, flys, climes walks or runs you can kill it and eat it. It's all protien anyway :)
