Niggle, I know you've just done this to niggle, so I'll humour you...

Let's work on a percentage basis.

One male, one female living together. Female 100% seat down. Male 20% seat down (depending on age and prostrate). So 60% of the time the seat is required in the 'down position'. Saving energy and not wasting time putting the seat in the minority position - it would therefore make sense to keep the seat down AT ALL TIMES.

If you believe what the Chinese say, and they do come up with some pretty profound stuff, you will lose all your good luck and wealth down the loo. So keep the seat down and you'll be luckier and more wealthy.

Nice scientific analysis there but ...

They don't really have "seats" in Asia so how does that fit in ?

All men and women are equal on a "lack of seat basis" ?

Thankfully, over the past eight years or so, western loos have become de rigueur. Even in our little hamlet in the bumpy bits. :)

Anyway :offtopic:
How do you feel about the seat up or down debate? It can cause major problems in relationships.

For men to say the seat must be left up is just as petty & annoying as for women to insist it be left down. Hopefully, both partners are fully equipped with hands, so why not just move the seat to its required position without debate or moaning? Too easy?

Making the hypothesis that on average in the western world, men tend to drink larger quantities of fluids (namely beer) it follows that in a healthy bladder men need to pee more (notwithstanding prostate problems in men and pelvic floor weaknesses in women). Logically the most energy saving position for a toilet seat in up - also reducing wear and tear on the seat hinges as its position is constantly changing.
Now, as to accuracy of peeing, the closer one is the the point of impact, the less chance of spraying where it shouldnt be sprayed.
Given that men are on average taller than women, the point of discharge to the point of impact is greater and thus requires concentration, good eyesight and good eye to hand co-ordination, all of which lessen with age.
So I guess that the safest is sitting down to pee but this may have a traumatic effect on men who are reluctant to sit down to pee, associating this with feminisation.
I offer this advice to men on behalf of women and hope that domestic bliss may be restored.

Learn to brace your legs, and take control of that high-powered stream.

How do you brace your legs? Well, it takes awareness and attitude. You need an attitude of I’m going to control this and make it work for me. That means you decide you are going to be the one in control of the thought steam.

Remember that a full reservoir can cause control problems. If the hose is thrashing around out of control it can cause damage and injury. It could suddenly whip out and knock someone over. It could direct water over the crowd and knock them down, drenching them in the process. It could break through a windowpane.

Visualise and respect its power. It’s spraying out experiences that you are then walking into. It’s spraying out paint in the shades of opinions, beliefs, worries, fears, hopes and expectations. Those “paintsâ€

I still don't have one in Nong Ki, but at the building supply yard in Nang Rong I've seen a sort of toilet seat on four legs like a milking stool with a hole in it that I was considering buying.
Incidentally, I occaisonally work on airliners from a certain middle eastern country that have a marvellous sticker in the toilets of a cartoon man stood on the bowl with a red line through it!
