Koh Tao

Post by KelpieKiss »

Hi,

I'm thinking of driving down to the island of Koh Tao in a few days and then hop on the boat. I want to drive as the bus takes about 10 hours and I can make Chumpon in 3 or 4. I have a few questions if anyone can help.

Does anyone know of a safe place to park a car in Chumpon for about a week? Does anyone know if the ferries are quite regular?

Also, any advise on nice places to stay for about 1000 baht a night would be great. Thanks in advance for any info.

I can help with a hotel. I've stayed a number of times at The Chumpon Palace Hotel which is right in the centre of town. It's friendly and clean. Rooms are aircon, with cable tv, mini bar, hot water shower and only 450 a night.
Also, try The Farang Bar. Most motorcycle taxi riders will know where it is - about 3-5 mins from above hotel. Does really good "pub grub" and Thai food. It's generally pretty full of travelers who are crossing over to Koh Tao. They have rooms. Not sure of the prices, but I reckon they'll be pretty basic and cheap.

You can park at the Lomprayah ferry port - we did for the last trip, left the car there for 4-5 days and took the cat across. It pissed down in Chumphon constantly while we were on Tao so the bastard wouldn't start when we got back!

Lomprayah is the fastest way to get there, leaves twice daily and you can book it in Soi Kanjanomai, Hua Hin - have a look on the Hua Hin Map - their office is just along from Thipurai City hotel.

Have a look here for accommodation:
