Barmy as a box of badgers

Post by margaretcarnes »

Just to show that life anywhere can be bizarre - not just in LOS! I'm just watching a programme on ITV3 about a guy who crawled on hands and knees from London to Canterbury. Apparently this was before last Christmas, and he did it to draw attention to the plight of the homeless. All very noble and wellmeaning, so why didn't I see any reports on it at the time?
There he is, in bright yellow gear (the stuff that ensures you don't get hit by a bus) crawling along pavements. With, for some obscure reason, a rose between his teeth, and several tin cans tied to his ankles, rather like a wedding car. With no support team either. Having to sit up at times to look right and left before crossing roads - (maybe his only sensible decision) and complaining about his sore knees.
Only in England......
A sprout is for life - not just for Christmas.

Talk about commitment to the cause! Have to admire the guy. How do you top something like that? Hands stands down the highway? Summersaulting?

There was a news article on BBC World Service a little while ago about someone who had crawled on their stomach for quite some distance (maybe a hundred miles) to some holy place in Italy. I think it was Italy.
Admittedly, that was some form of religious penance. They were in a right state when they got there. The journey had lasted months.

Yeah, I saw that one too - that religious guy on his pilgrimage. I scratch my head at what people do in anticipation of an "Appreciative God"

Mags

penitants have been doing this since Chaucer's day....theres a route that runs out of London via the crossroads (where the cross was) at seven sisters... theres a version in Spain penitants do at Xmas and one in Rome too....

before the Chinese invaded Tibet there were knee routes around the Johkang temple and around a couple of the mountains.....thats been stopped now.

I saw someone doing it at Doi Suitep in Chang Mai one time....man thats a long climb on your knees.

there was one a few years ago that did a circle of London pushing a walnut with his nose .... think he was a performance artist tho....

gotta love em eh? :thumb:

There are many, many routes for penitents in Spain on various feast days and I dare say in other countries too.
