could not have put it better myself all of a sudden every Tom Dick and harry is an authority on life in Thailand but am trying to stick to legal and travel questions after my years sabatical.Sorry to see that Guess,Burgher,tuk tuk mike and even Jaime do not post much or at all any more.Its a loss.
Sorry for inadequate comment as to your journalistic capabilities but my feelings on that unfortunate scandinavian remain the same.Was hoping that he would be pardoned by now but have not encountered that news so far though I have not been pouring over Bangkok post site.
On a final more disarming note note,good luck Edwina,a lot of posts were initially quite moderate to your opinions but posts went downhill quite rapidly but you must remember that 99% of male posters who told you to ship out have a young female black haired dictionary at home who takes care of all problems that require Thai lingual intervention.If it gets too difficult for you in Thailand ,I would reccomend Malaysia,its light years ahead of thailand and attracts a very different style of foreigner.That said Ho hin is some peoples piece of paradise and good luck to them.I carried on the search for Nirvana but I did really like the place.

I live 50k north west of HH in the real Thailand, only go to HH sometimes i find it like any holiday town in Spain and would never wish to live there. I have lived here 6 yrs and love the place , saying that Edwina or who ever you are has some very truthful points in the main setting aside the obvious wind up parts dealing with HH local foreigners. The local people on this forum never made me feel accepted in there little click anyway and that is probably the same you can say of HH in general i have met some very nice people but it is a bit clicky around the bars aswell butt maybe i don't go often enough.

You know the rules!
have been reading many of the posts on Hua Hin. It strikes me I have a better idea of what to expect, but like anything if your face fits it is easier.
My wife and I intend to retire to Asia, and we loved Thailand and especially Hua Hin.
I am sure that we will get frustrated and angry about things that would seem unfair or corrupt. Indeed I would be none to happy about people that might threaten my life , as a result of lunatic driving. I guess I just have buy an oldish big car, black out the windows and work out that my tax will be when I get caught.
As for property, everybody knows you cannot own land legally, so you go into it with your eyes open !
I have learn`t to be aware of flooding, water shortage, service charges, non refundable deposits etc etc.
I love sport, will play golf, tennis and dive and sail.
I now know also to worry about health insurance, and the hospitals, but understand that Bangkok has excellent facilities, and indeed so does Pattya.
As for where to actually live, I agree with advice, rent and see.
The question I have is, outside of Dec to Feb, when is the best time to visit, this part of Thailand.
I am expecting a reasonable lifestyle can be had for 60,000 to 75,000 BHT a month, but am not sure about whether renting out once you have purchased is as good as some people say. Seems an awful lot of building going on !
As for people saying it as they see it, well why not. The place is corrupt in most places, but then money talks the world over! sad but true.
As for nightlife, well I am on the Pattya forum, but sadly do not have enough posts to be worthy of access here yet.
I love the food and most of the people I have meet, and yes they must think I am exceedingly wealthy, and some will expect that we pay are way in that respect.
I guess you enjoy the barter, and be kind to those that are much worse off than you.
Perhaps that is rose tinted, who knows
