Supermarket fun...

I went inti the food section of the little supermarket down the road from the police station yesterday....its a treasure trove of stuff.

Found some green Tabasco, some good cheese.....proper ham.....

...so if they can do it why cant Tesco?

Yep. It used to be (maybe still is) called Royal Print. It's pretty much opposite Pizza Corner on Damnern Kasem.

I think Tesco don't do these things, Sandman, because Tesco cater primarily to Thais. We're an afterthought.

Its a great supermarket, good wines, lovely bread, salami loads of stuff. The Mini farm shop is also a little diamond - lots of fresh veg, even found fresh rosemary!! Fantastic. Both are a little expensive but well worth it.

I think Tesco is waste of time...terrible selction, and poorly designed. I prefer the supermarket on soi 70, across the tracks on the left. Not sure name, its in thai..but its a green sign...good selection of farang and thai food ingredients. However, I dont remember seeing produce..

Talking of Supermarkets is DA Villa Supermarket in Hua Hin open for business yet?

Sandman I think the Green Tabasco that you mentioned ia called The "Tabasco Verde". I like the Verde version better than the red ones. They are not as Hot but somehow tacky in taste.

Im with you there on Tabasco Verde.....came across it in Frisco and missed it ever since (that and blueberry jam....miss sod all else of the states)...like you said it doesn't have that sweet tacky aftertaste Red has...gives an egg n bacon sandwich a real zzzzzinnnng!

I just dont understand the mindset of the Tesco manager.....he could make a mint selling a larger selection of all this more expensive imported stuff, and whenever Im in there there are lots o farangs in there too....but no. We will sell 300 types of fish sauce, 200 types of soy sauce, and 100 types of veggie oil instead. One small 4 foot shelf of "Imported Foods"......no real cheese.....Madness.

Still....their 99bht shirt selection is great....a whole new wardrobe for a tenner

Probably a very stupid/naive question, but have you ever approached this Tesco manager to tell him what you would like?

My only such experiences have been with Tesco in the UK. Here, if you tell them what you want, they will normally get in a stock 'on trial'. If the item sells well, it will remain on the shelves indefinitely.

I have to ask because I regularly see Tesco bad mouthed on this forum, but I just wonder who is really at fault. If you reversed the situation, and you were the manager of my local Yate Tesco, you could probably satisfy the locals, but would you know what Thai foods my wife would need? In such circumstances I could whinge a lot, or be proactive and ask you to stock the right food.

Excellent point, BB, and I agree with previous posts saying that Tesco could make a mint by adding a few things we farang 'need' (what happened to Amora Dijon mustard???). I just have a picture of myself, next time I'm at Tesco, saying, "I'd like to speak with the manager," or even, in my limited Thai, "Yaak puut huanaa khap." Can't help thinking I won't get very far, but this I promise you, and purely inspired by you, I will try. I'm smiling, but I'm also serious. Will let you know how I get on.

It won't be for a few days, so, while I'm at it, does anyone have any requests?

While the big Tesco-Lotus store in the Market Village Mall has made my life here in Hua Hin quite a bit easier ( I DO like wheeling around, filling up the cart and getting everything in one trip/one store.. .and not having to look for parking within a mile of the store)) And I so hated that old "Shopping Maaw" with a passion!

However, it is often a zoo in there and usually not a pleasant shopping experience, especially when it is busy. Aisles blocked by entire families out for a day of fun, those dreadful, constant bong, bong, bong, bong announcements, no guarantee that the foods you want will be in stock, the checkouts etc. . .stuff that has been hashed over here on other threads many a time. (And no, this is not a life or death situation, it does not compare to Dafur, or global warming or world hunger. . .start your own thread)

It has been built for Thais and caters to Thais . .and like the movie theater above it, the interest of management in making this farang or any farang a "happy camper" is nil. I wouldn't even try.

I am used to just gritting my teeth, finding a cart that has four good wheels on it, plunging in, getting what I need as quickly as possible and getting out of there as fast as I can. Nothing about it makes me want to linger or savor the shopping experience!

Please tell me that the Villa Market will be better! I do not know the chain and have never knowingly shopped in one. And have they entered the 20th century and found some method of communicating with their staff that does not involve a public address system? ( "We can put a man on the moon. . . .etc etc)

I am ready for Villa Market.

Is this a fact? Are you talking from experience? Or do you just feel like an Alien in a strange land?

If you don't ask, you'll never really know. Maybe the Thai race are actually friendlier than you perceive. If somebody was ignoring me, I'd probably ignore them as well.

C'mon guys, take that big step - you've decided that you want to live with them - try the communication thing as well. Who knows, just maybe they won't bite
