i agree with w/lust's post.
it's much the same as how the big food stores control the market with their 'illegal' price fixing to crush the small retailers.
if there are shortages of rice & sugar, you can be sure there are forces controlling it & eventually profiting from it

There is a world wide rice and other foods shortage.
Drought in some countries, USA growing fuel products and other climatic problems such as the Burma cyclone don't help.
Countries releasing there stockpiles for sale now are keeping the price down, not up as was suggested.
Thai rice has gone from $26.00 per 25kg in March to $42.00. (Thats retail here in Aus)
And the next shipment will be considerably more.

If anyone makes money from this it will be the millers, exporters and the government( as they run those collection centers in the middle of nowhere ), not the farmers.
Although, if it goes too far then the farmers might get pissed off as the cost of production is going up and they are not afraid to take their problems to Bangkok.
