Grandma's Papaya Salad Restaurant
Richard
Early - it was probably between 8 & 9 am (early for me)
Breakfast - they had two or three choices, I can't remember in detail
Menu - just ask for one, it seemed to include a few things I fancied trying
I' back in London now so was a couple of months ago i was last there
They always gave me free bananas - They reckoned it was advisable for farangs who eat Som Tam
Regards SJ

Grandma's Papaya Salad restaurant
Sorry Big Boy I'm a bit lost with the directions as well. Hang a right off Petkasem down Chomsin, then LEFT onto Naebkerhardt? If so it used to be quite a dark looking place, but did good takeaways.
But there was also a large restaurant which fits your description better on the Northbound corner of Naebkerhardt/Chomsin, which had stalls outside daytime doing great fishy fried bits!
Apologies for the lack of navigation skills this time of night. Your food/eatery comments are always appreciated. I was a great fan of Sara Janes and lived close enough to be able to nip there for larb quite often, with sticky rice. Have found a good recipe for it back here in blighty, but it's very time consuming to make properly, so look forward to trying Grandmas.
It's a shame that expats still seem to find the Naebkerhardt area a mystery sometimes. It really isn't too far out of town and well worth exploring IMO.

When over here recently and spent an evening in SJ's kitchen learning the art of Isaan food. Mind you took a suitcase of the right stuff from the market here home to make. No equivalent in the UK

That sounds like the right place - I believe it was takeaway only at one time.margaretcarnes wrote:Sorry Big Boy I'm a bit lost with the directions as well. Hang a right off Petkasem down Chomsin, then LEFT onto Naebkerhardt? If so it used to be quite a dark looking place, but did good takeaways.
The new owners have gutted the back, and have done a really nice job with the new seating area.

We met a few friends there the other day for a birthday party. It was great! Parahandy (aka Mr.VS) had nam tok moo and som tam (Thai style) and said that it was the best he'd had in Thailand. I decided on a Western tuna salad and it was delicious. Lovely fresh salad with what looked like nearly a whole can of tuna.
Being with some 'oldies' we chose to sit at a table, rather than the rather inviting cushions on the floor. I think I'll go with some youngsters next time.
I'd highly recommend it for a place to take visitors to try Isaan food - if they're not that adventurous they can choose one of the Western dishes.
The final bill was amazingly cheap and included several bottles of Chang and Heinekin.

P.S. We were the only farang there, the other customers were Thai. Always a good sign...

"Properly trained, man can be a dog's best friend"
Tik, the lady who owns Grandma's Papaya Salad (unless it's changed recently) used to have a place in Takiab called Good Friends and it was the best and cheapest Thai food there. She sold to a Brit named Bobby before she moved up to Hua Hin and opened "Grandma's". Bobby's Good Friends is still popular, especially with ex-pats but the food was much better when Tik owned the place.
I have to concur, following Big Boys review I took the 10 minute walk from the Hilton to Grandma's when on holiday in July and the food was simply superb, we actually went back a 2nd night.
Myself, Wife and 9 year old shared 5 dishes and a couple of drinks for under 600 Baht, BARGAIN !!!
I could be wrong, but I was told it was actually now owned by a Canadian gentleman ? on our 2nd visit the guy who welcomed us did have a North American accent.
Highly recommended
