Womblegongs and the sea

Post by charlesh »

Here in Oz up north we have nasty little creatures that inhabit the sea and create mayhem by running their translucent trailing tentacles against unsuspecting bodies. Men have been known to wear stocking and douse themselves in vinegar to resemble something out of the "rocky horror" show. Are such things an issue in the sea around HH ie. the "stigers" during coastal migrations. We also have stone fish and blue ringed octopii which can u deader than a Thai Isaan super hot curry or 2 bottles of Maekong. What if any dangers lurk in the waters in HH and surrounds/

Your query is probably best left to the sub aqua brigade, but i know Buksida was stung by a jelly a few weeks ago and his arm was a mess. I don't think we get the box jellies here, but are still some nasty species out there, especially during rainy season when they're washed in closer to shore.
Stonefish and the octopii I've got no idea about, but would reckon they're likely around coral? There's not a lot of that around HH.

There are some nasty jellies in the waters off Hua Hin, I can certainly testify to that. You may get the odd ray or stonefish also but its unlikely, the bottom is very silty and the water is muddy.

Of course further south where the water is clearer and the coral proliferates there are all manner of beasties including scorpionfish, banded sea snakes, cone shells, fire coral, and a host of other marine creatures that will give you pain if you venture too close!

What you have in Oz are called "Wobbegongs" or commonly known as carpet sharks.

Charlesh I have seen some huge jellyfish (bigger than dinner plates in diameter) on HH beach in the times that I have been there.
Have seen some smaller ones on some of the islands but not sure if they are as dangerous as the stingers you get in NQ, NT or the West. Is still best to keep away from them if you happen to see any around.
Do not think there is any need to be swimming in a wet suit to protect yourself.
