escalator at the Village Market

Post by BelgianBoy »

Not a rant this time, just an observation.....

One week the escalators to go up are on the lefthand side, he next week, "they" change it all around..... wassup with this ?

Is there a logical explanation for this or is this done on purpose to confuse the shoppers ? I even saw confused Thais, and its not because of the dubbing !

not calling all this TIT, but its close to it.....

escalator maintenance

Post by huahindolly »

I believe they alternate direction of the escalators each month so that the parts wear evenly in both directions. I'm not an escalator expert, but this seems like a logical explanation to me.

Correct observation huahindolly. I once worked in a department store back home where at a meeting it was suggested to change the direction of the escalators every now and then. This would expand service life and save on maintenance costs. The management took the extra costs for granted in order not to confuse or annoy customers. So in Market Village a different choice has been made. Second reason could be to re-route potential customers and "force" them to have a look at other businesses. Like a supermarket that replaces their products every now and then so you must look for them again and in the process you might encounter products that you never noticed before. Hence new sales. Old marketing trick.
We are all living in 'the good old days' of the future.

Maybe they do it so that if those big groups from Bangkok still haven’t decided where to go after they get off the escalator in a weeks time, they can get back on again and go back to where they came from!

LOL, so in the same reasoning we would see many people driving backward for half the time for the wear an tear on their cartires.....
I full understand the explenation furnished by Roel, but it is confusing.....

As for the real wear and tear, as an engineer, its all circular movements to me, same wear and tear if forwards or backwards to me.....
Mai pen rai.
Another mystery solved

Q. Why are the escalators reversed during the week?
A. The units are reversed to prevent the tracks from wearing in one direction. By reversing the units daily, we ensure the equipment wears evenly and in doing so reduces possible outages.

Belgium, are you saying you do not change over your car's left and right wheels every 3-4 months ? It's common practice in the UK, although some people are lazy and do not bother doing it. You have to change both front and back though, to ensure 'alignment'.

Super,

No, we do not do that, we change front left with back right, and front right with back left, yearly. Same same, but different.
And yes, I am lazy, the garage does it for me.....

Good site. Now people will believe it when I tell them, I had unidirectional tyres. Apparently they were a necessity for me driving a 340HP family saloon car. All I know is they cost a fortune, lasted about three months and had arrows on them to tell me which way the had to go.

As for the reversing of the escalators, what do they do with the stairway to heaven?

I can't be arsed rotating my tires so I just drive backward for 10-15 miles once or twice a month. Seems to be working, though I'm not an expert...or an engineer! :thumb:

Why is it that they never match the speed of the escalator hand rails to the stairs?? You always end up leaning well back or headbutting the person in front of you....

It`s a basic fact of physics dear boy! The escalator is basically a flattened out wheel, so the outer rim (the handrail), has to move at a faster feet per minute rate, or metres per second, to maintain its position in the scheme of things! :thumb:
