Hua Hin Regatta 2008 - July 30-August 3

Post by Super Joe »

The Hua Hin Regatta 2008 will take place during July 30 – August 3, 2008 at Hua Hin Beach in front of Sofitel.
I've never been to one before and not really into boats but could be a good day out, there's bound to be food and drink stalls and stuff.

Went last year and there's not really that much to see. If you time it right as the yachts are going out or coming in, it can be quite a spectacle, but the actual racing is a long way off shore and therefore rather difficult to follow.
Still, there's a fair bit of activity and a lot of yachts, so it's worth the effort to take a look. While away the afternoon with a few cool ones on a deckchair.
I also didn't see any stalls and certainly no dolly birds at beer tents which was a bit disappointing.

Agree with the above, its not really a spectator sport, most of the boats are miles out to sea anyway and the only action is when they all come in at the end of the days racing.

Big Boy, judging by your PAFC reference are you from Devon? If so the regattas we are used to are like Dartmouth regatta, my home town.

A bit further West - Sutton Harbour regatta was about my limit. Dartmouth was always a bit too far.

I raced in the J P Morgan around the island race on the 28 june, 1,900 yachts all racing at the same time. Around the back of the island at St Catherines point it was wind against tide and an 8 ft swell, we were going down wind with the spiniker up surfing down the swell and every forth or sixth wave we would crash through it and have the whole boat underwater it was very very rough. If you google the above name you can read the proffesional log and take a look at the pictures
I am surprised that none of the charter boat company's haven't taken the opportunity to offer a day out beer, bbq, and watching the regatta, a really good opportunity to do some dramatic photography maybe it could be something a bit different in HH, so c'mon Barry at Mermaid have a think about it.

I think you're over estimating the size of the Hua Hin regatta. Here's a picture I took the day after the regatta with everything being loaded on to a Navy landing craft - nothing much over 8 feet.

Here are the shots I took last year to give you an idea:

O.K chaps thanks for that i did over estimate the size of the regatta, dinghy sailing is still very exciting if you are up close, great to snap a few pictures of the action.
I would like to know as a keen sailor, can you rent dinghy's and have a bit of competition with a local dinghy club.

I've been thinking about your previous post and although not as exiting as
Around the back of the island at St Catherines point it was wind against tide and an 8 ft swell, we were going down wind with the spiniker up surfing down the swell and every forth or sixth wave we would crash through it and have the whole boat underwater it was very very rough
it could be quite a nice day laying in the sun watching the little boats dash about whilst enjoying a cold beer or 10. My trouble is that I'd be like a giant tomato when I returned to shore after all of that sea air/sun - used to be bad enough after a day's deep sea angling in UK waters.

Kendo, I'd be happy to take you out in my dinghy to get some action shots. Might not keep up very well, but it could be fun.
BTW I'm planning to go to the Southampton Boat Show in September, the first time in many years.
