Well, it's quite comforting... maybe I got more than I paid for? Why did none of these other technical geniuses tell me the good news? - no, don't bother answering that...

(To be honest, I would have been surprised, as it was the recommended shop by the Shell petrol station, and they'd already called me and said that a 17" screen had been delivered by mistake, so I'd have to wait another day).

Mind you, I was using an 8" metal ruler with most of the markings rubbed out...

And I was probably pissed at the time. (Bloody must have been when I posted...)

While we're on the subject, and strictly on a 'Digital Realm' level, I bought a PStar keyboard at the same time, and the markings are already coming off the keys. Still, it cost less than a couple of cans of Belgian beer from Villa, so I'll live with it.

The width and height is the visible screen. To sell a screen which is not the size stated could come under the tades description act. But this is Thailand so does not apply.
How ever he was told a screen size, which would not include the plastic surround.
If that logic applied to doors the surround would be smaller than the door and it would never shut.
Also is it a flat screen or curved screen as a different calculation would be needed.

If a 17 inch screen was delvered by mistake which screen were you measuring. Because if you were measuring the 17 inch the width and height would be way out in fact it would look very peculiar.

What measurement were stated on the box were they in centimetres which could explain the aberration in the measurements

Why did the shell petrol staion recommend this computer shop were they on commission.

If it helps the shop further down the road towards the town centre on the left hand side is a stationers and they sell very good rulers.
:D
Ps What were you drinking I must try it

I can assure you D-M is not a troll. I used to have one as a key-ring. It was a short, ugly little thing, with long hair. On the other hand....

Thanks for the thought, Lindos, much appreciated - but I've actually been quite enjoying this thread in a masochistic sort of way, and I'm quite certain it's a 19" screen.

Just in case that's not the question you meant, the answer to the other one is "God only knows, could have been anything!"

Why are TV’s and monitors measured diagonally? I was bored so I looked it up:

The reason for this goes back to the beginning of television; the first TVs were made with round-faced picture tubes; in the early days that was the only way the tubes could be made. A rectangular mask was placed in front of the tube to conceal the blank areas of the screen. Because the size of the tube (diameter of the face) was the critical parameter for the set, that was used to specify the picture size. Of course, the diameter of the tube is also the diagonal of the picture. So when you bought a 12" TV, you bought a TV with a 12" CRT. (At one time Zenith introduced a TV with a round picture to give the appearance of a larger picture; of course, the corners of the picture were cut off.)

Eventually, tubes with rectangular faces were developed, but because the standard had been established and people were familiar with picture sizes specified as diagonal, the system was continued.

Note: Diagonal measurement was being used long before the FCC established it's rule. Quote from the report:

"When the Commission initially promulgated the Rule in 1966, most television manufacturers measured the dimensions of their television sets diagonally, just as they do today."
