My daughter picked up her new iPhone on Tuesday, it is amazing even to this jaded cynic. Its a computer that makes phone calls.
She simply continued her existing phone contract and got the phone for the princessly additonal sum of ...9K baht.
Cracking it to work on other networks isn't a problem - but the lack of 3G in Thailand seems to offset the advantages of having this phone. It seems like another toy for Thai rich-kids.

Sounds like far too much money for a kid's toy to me
Depends what you will end up using it for Guess, if you only make calls and SMS then it would be a waste of money. There's some info on the thread about what it does as a business tool, email and the like.
There's tons of stuff I use mine for that saves me leaving a bar and finding a PC. 3G isn't available in Thailand someone said but the internet/email works fine off WiFi and EDGE if not out in the sticks with weak reception.
As for Johnnyk's daughter and the 9,000 Baht she paid. She ended up making on the deal as they also gave her an iPod for free
She's 14, works part-time in a food court and she paid for it herself so i can't grumble. it is amazing technology (status, too) but too much tech for my needs, i just want to make phone calls cheaply.
Johnyk your daughter needs to be Commended at least she'll know what's the REAL value of Money ism Hard work, which some of the Rich kids who get an iPhone 3G form their parents Money don't know.
By the way today I went to MBK Center iinto the 3rd floor which is knwn to be Mobile Phone Mekka. there I surveyed and poked around the diffrent shops and found out that iPhone 3G prices varies between 40K and 45K and don't ask for 8GB's they are sold out in their initial makrkets the 22 first countries that released them simutaneously on 11th July. What is left are the 16 GB's which we thais get them over detour. Some of the mobile Phone shops send some of their Men over to Singapore, Taiwan, or even Australia to get them Iphones locked and they unlock em back here when a customer buys it.
Sansung do not sell the i900 right now officially but @ MBK there are allrady some i900 OMNIA's available. prices range from 30K to 35k considerable less than The iPhone 3G.

Thanks for the update Understudy.
I'm shocked at the prices, the first iPhone 8MB was 21.5k in MBK last year and is on sale in Market Village for 19.5k now. They have now doubled in price from first version.
I think the Omnia is the better option, more interface friendly with other software, Microsoft particularly and a fair bit cheaper.

A Thai friend of mine explained me that the dealers have to get the iPhone from the USA with a one year subscription to AT&T. In the 45 k you pay the iPhone _AND_ the subscription.
IMO, the 1st question is do you need 3G ? The 2nd is do you need 16 Gig ?
I have the 1st one (Edge) with 8 Gigs and I do not want to change it :-)

Agree Francois, mines 8GB and have about 75% free memory!!
As BaaBaa said you do not need 3G here as its not available, my original iPhone works faster on net than my laptop and EDGE is ok for checking emails, using HHAD, checking who has left Spurs etc.
The original iPhone is only 19.5k for 8GB or 21.5k for 16GM in Market Village, half price the latest version.
