Adjusting driving habits

Post by buksida »

A few observations here having spent a lot of last week behind the wheel.

This obviously doesn't apply to Hua Hin which is still pure lunacy on the roads but has anyone noticed Thai driving habits have changed slightly since the fuel prices have gone up? They're not as lead footed as before, especially on the highway.

Travelling at a steady 100-110kph and you hardly get overtaken at all now. Compare that to a year ago when there will always be some muppet in an over-powered pickup sled with feeble brakes and shocking road holding behind you flashing its lights.

My little road trip south was a pleasure to drive - until I returned to Hua Hin of course.

True Buksi, I've noticed there is a difference too. Still a few 'muppets' that think they're 'Spanky Spangler', but there is a noticable decline.

Think the days of wizzing around town etc in a 3 litre turbo pickup as if it was a Honda Jazz are coming to and end.

As usual, habits and change often only happen when people are hit where it hurts, in the pocket.

It would be interesting to compare the official accident figures at the end of this year, compared to last year.

Hhhmmmmmm, might be a lesson to learn in all of this for the Thais. Though might be just dreaming when I say that.

I too think that the average type of lunatic overtaker really cannot be bothered with the fuel being 30 or 50 baht. 250 baht per liter would not slow them down either. I think it was just a lucky day on the road for you Buksida. These things happen! I can assure you that in general traffic here in the south really is not any better than in the rest of Thailand. THe motorbikes are even worse because here for some reason it is customary to drive on the middle of the road. Do under no circumstances keep to the left is the standard. Annoying and dangerous. And we know who is to blame in case of accidents.
