TR to Phuket

Post by pfotoguy369 »

Phuket

Went to Phuket last month, was my first trip down there. Went with my TG and a couple of friends. This is mostly going to be a picture report.

My friend has a truck so we drove down from my place in Hua Hin.
Personally I like driving through country. I give me the liberty to stop where I want along the way.

First place we stopped was a waterfall

Image

This was a crab with an attitude, a bad attitude
Image

Image

Originally we were headed down to Surin Islands but found out after we got down there that they’re closed that time of year due to hurricanes.

We did find some nice bungalows to stay in for 650 baht a night.
Image

Nice size rooms and most important clean,
Main drawback was no English speaking TV. Had 3 channels of Thai.

Well me and the Telac had to find something else to do to occupy our time.
Image

This is my friend Kung
Image

This is my Telac Noi
Image

This is Kung’s friend “M”
Image

Saw some beautiful beaches.
Image

Image

also saw a lot of signs like this
Image

Must be a universal thing, see a sign, and put a bullet hole in it
Image

Well time to stop for lunch. A little Som Tam
Image

A little Bar B Que Chicken for me. I do like Som Tam, Mai Pet.
With out the crab.
Image

The girls had the Som Tom
Image

With the crab
Image

Full stomachs make for happy campers
Image

Good morning salute
Image

On the road again
Image

We came across another nice resort. At 3100 baht a night.
No we didn’t stay.
Image

Nice grounds
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Had some giant elephant ears
Image

Nice place but a little rich for my blood. I’d rather spend money on good scoff.

Well here’s something you don’t see everyday.
Image
A truck load of coconut picking monkeys

Image

Meanwhile, back at the beach.
There was this one legged guy on crutches going out for a swim. Went pretty far out too. I couldn’t figure out how he didn’t sink those in the sand?
Image

Surfs up
Image

This is me
Image
I’m lying.

Image

Boat for sale: looks good runs great
Image

Flags up, skier in the water
Image

Well we took the big boat for an island tour.
About 2 seconds after this was taken those horns went off,
Wiped that smile right off her face.
Image

Kickin back
Image

I love to take pictures of other people taking pictures
Image

Image

Image

Image

I asked this one if I could take her picture. I asked her what she was thinking about. She said her boyfriend.
Image

Don’t ya just hate it when you’re taking a picture and someone gets their fat ass in the way?
Image
Happens to me a lot.
Image

Time for some Buoy diving
Image

Image

Snorkel time
Image

Image

Bet I can tell which way the wind is coming from.
Image

Ah Yeah! The wind that’s what I’m thinking about.
Image

This is not what I meant when I asked if I could get a little head.
Image

Well time to eat again
Image

Have board, will travel
Image

First, you go pray in the Temple
Image

Then you go swimming between the signs that say
Image
NO SWIMMING!!!
Image

Drinking Problem?? What makes you think that?
Image

I decided in order to quit drinking, every time I had a drink I’d pull a hair out of my dog.
Image

I’m about halfway through my other dog and it’s occurring to me I may need professional help.
Image
I can’t understand why they keep running away from me.

This monkey had another monkey growing out of it’s chest
Image

Image

It was scaring all the other monkeys away
Image

Notice the only words in English on this sign are about drinking.
Whom do you think that its directed at?
Image

Well let’s rent a boat from this man and go to James Bond Island.
Image

Not that this has anything to do with anything but it struck me as funny.
I have some slippers I use to wear when I go diving.
My Girlfriend is packing and comes out and asks me if I want her to pack my shoes to go to Iceland?
Iceland?
What are you talking about?
When you go to Iceland you take your special shoes.
I have know idea what your talking about. When did we go to Iceland?
We go Iceland Kho Larn when we live in Pattaya.

Oh, right! Yes you can pack them for me OK.

Some Island pics.
Image

Image

Image

Some cave drawings
Image

This is a little island village we past on the way to JB island.
Image
We’ll come back to it later

Image

More islands
Image

Image

Party barge
Image

Had some cave we got to go through
Image

Image

I’d like to get me one of these boats.

Image

Then I could park it next to my Brother’s and bring down the neighborhood.
Image

Dead ahead James Bond Island
Image

Image

After the movie, many people came to enjoy its pristine beauty.
In the Thai wisdom they decided it needed something.
Image
Souvenir shops Yeah! That’s the ticket!!

Has a nice pier landing
Image

Cave next to the pier
Image

I don’t know what it is but I love shots like this
Image

Image

Image

Image

Little speed boat
Image

Image

Image

Then all of a sudden, without warning, the sky’s opened up and the rains came.
Image

Sittin on the dock of the bay. Waiting for the rain to stop
Image
Our boat driver Capitan “Smiley”

Now I have a Thai driver’s license and in a lot of parks I can get in for half price or even the same as a Thai. But not this time
Image

Stuff to see in the park
Image

Remember that fishing village a while back. Well we’re here.
This walkway just scares the shit out of me.
Image

Lots of colorful shops
Image

Image

Must be siesta time
Image

While the parents sleep the kids are in school
Image

Image

I guess when you live on an island its prudent to learn about things from the sea

Image

Image

Had some great architecture there
Image

Image

Artistic shot
Image

This was some kind of cashew, peanut, chilies stuff that the girls loved.
Image

Image

Image

Island life
Image

This guy was 91 years young. I slipped him a few baht for letting me take the picture
Image

Wet pussy
Image

But the pet rooster is high and dry
Image

Image

They do some fish raising too
Image

Traps
Image

OK time to leave the island
Image

Sorry for the poor picture but spotted these strange looking little fish
Image

This is the rain catching barrel. As the wife would say “only broke little bit”
Image

Image

Image

This guy was really pleased I asked to take his picture
Image

Saw this concrete monster on they way back. Was some kind of museum?
Image

Well that’s it!! Yeah!!! Not sure if this will fit on 1 report or not.
We’re about to find out.

Nice photos!

Post by Chas »

We just returned from a very similar tour of Phuket, Krabi, Phi-Phi Island and the like and I enjoyed seeing your take on the experience Fotoguy. I am not planning to post pics at the moment ( I may later) but I wanted to comment on the experience.

Phi Phi Island itself was too much like "spring break" for my taste. Mostly young backpackers in search of ( and obviously successfully finding) booze and sex! ( Looking for Leonardo) We walked around a lot and saw enough fire throwers/ jugglers to last a lifetime. It must be the national headquarters of this sport!

Our tour of the "Maya Beach" where they filmed "the Beach" was a huge disappointment. I estimate that the beach had between six and eight hundred people on it when we arrived. You could literally not walk a few feet without dodging someone. There were about 30+ smaller boats and several large cruisers. ( And this is low season?) Depressing stop and the rest of the tour we kept looking for chances to escape the crowds but the large tour boats seem to stick together and make the same circuit. If you ever go, hire a small boat of your own and make it clear that you do not want to join the milling throngs.

We also saw large number of farangs working as bartenders, waitresses, scuba guides and practically any occupation you can think of! (One female farang fire thrower was absolutely spectacular!) OK What is up with that? No Immigration Department out there . . .different laws than apply here? Walking down the main street, I estimated roughly fifty percent of the people working the tourist shops to be farang.

The other notable difference is the nearly complete absence of dogs. No soi dogs. No a single one. . .but lots of soi cats. . .. Someone explained that this was because the island is largely Muslim ( the calls to prayer five times a day were a bit weird. . mixed in with the disco beats of the spring breakers. ) But I did not know that Muslims were anti-dog!

Phuket was our other main stop. Luckily we had a lovely little hotel and spent a lot of time at the pool. I wasn't impressed with the place. We have it SO much better here in Hua Hin, that's for sure! The only thing I saw there that I liked was the universal observance of the direction of traffic flow. I did not see ONE motorcycle (or Car) going the wrong way on a street. (A sight so common here as to be unremarkable.) What is up with this? Same country? Same laws?

Great photos pfg, you have a knack with people shots.

Interesting comments on the area Chas, I've also observed the 'farang working' aspect in many other provinces and wonder how they get away with it. Hua Hin is one of the strictest places for foreigners in Thailand, probably due to the royal/elite connections the town has and the resultant lower tolerance for foreigners working here. Additionally the islands tend to be a lot more laid back in nature both from the locals and visitors.

I did a trip report myself comparing the two after my last visit:

Great photos.
Thankyou for taking the time to introduce me to them. With the hangover I've got today, you're the only person who has made me laugh and most importantly - smile..
